Early Life and Music
Terry Im was born in Toronto, Canada. His parents are from South Korea. He grew up in a very musical family. His dad played piano, and his mom sang in the church choir. Both of his older sisters played musical instruments too. Music was always around him, all the time.
Terry's first memories of beatboxing were when he copied his dad's piano playing. His parents saw how much he loved music. They helped him learn to create music, starting with the piano. He later learned to play the flute. Both of his sisters played the flute, so he would often pick up their instruments.
All three siblings went to Claude Watson School for the Arts. This is a special public arts school for grades 4 to 8. Students have to audition to get in. After a while, Terry lost interest in the flute. He then tried playing the drums. He quickly fell in love with making rhythms and beats.
When he was in Grade 7, he learned to play the drums. When he wasn't drumming, he would use his mouth to make drum sounds. His experience with breath control from the flute helped him. His drumming skills also made his beatboxing special. This helped him stand out from other kids who were beatboxing.
Terry first performed beatboxing live when he was about 14 or 15. This was at his high school, Earl Haig Secondary School. He would audition for school assemblies. He often performed for about 2000 students.
