Where is Kajabbi?
Kajabbi is located in a very remote part of north-west Queensland. It sits right by the Leichhardt River.
This small town is about 1,805 kilometers (or 1,122 miles) north-west of Brisbane, which is the capital city of Queensland.
Kajabbi is tiny! People have described it as having "no more than a pub and a couple of houses." The only business in town is the Kalkadoon Hotel.
Kajabbi's Past
How Kajabbi Got Its Name
The town of Kajabbi got its name from the old Kajabbi railway station. The Queensland Railways Department officially named the station on April 29, 1915.
The name "Kajabbi" is believed to be an Aboriginal word. It means "kite hawk," which is a type of bird.
Early History and People
Near Kajabbi is a place called Battle Mountain. A long time ago, this area was home to the Kalkadoon people, who are an Aboriginal group.
There was a difficult time when the Kalkadoon people had conflicts with European cattlemen. Sadly, many Kalkadoon people lost their lives during these events.
Schools and Services
Kajabbi State School opened its doors on September 15, 1919. It provided education for children in the area for many years. The school eventually closed on January 28, 1975.
In the 1920s, Kajabbi was an important center for nearby copper mines. These mines were located at places like Dobbyn and Mount Cuthbert.
The town was also a "railhead." This means it was a place where cattle from a large part of north-west Queensland were brought. From Kajabbi, the cattle were loaded onto trains and sent to Cloncurry and other places.
Kajabbi also had a Post Office, which opened on June 13, 1927. Before that, a smaller "receiving office" had been open since 1917. The Post Office closed in 1973.
Recent Times
In 2009, the Kalkadoon Hotel, which was the main business in town, closed down. The owners said they had trouble meeting new rules and regulations.
Heritage Sites
Kajabbi has some important historical places that are protected. These are called "heritage-listed" sites.
One of these sites is the Mount Cuthbert Township and Smelter. It is located north-west of Kajabbi Township.
