Kamano Island facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Kamano Island is an island located off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. It's found in the area where Queen Charlotte Strait and Johnstone Strait meet. You can find it east of Harbledown Island, north of Village Island, and south of Turnour Island.

This island was also known as Coffin Island in the past. It is home to Coffin Island Indian Reserve No. 3. This reserve is managed by the Tlowitsis Nation, an Indigenous group. It's important to know that there's another place called Coffin Island near Ladysmith Harbour on Vancouver Island.

The Story Behind Kamano Island's Name

Kamano Island is named after George Kamano (around 1822-1919). He was the first non-Indigenous person to settle on nearby Harbledown Island. George Kamano was likely from Hawaii or Tahiti.

He worked for the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Rupert from 1854 to 1869. In 1870, he left the fort. People believe he then made his home on Harbledown Island. George Kamano passed away in 1919 in Alert Bay.
