The Name of Kamarah

Kamarah has an interesting history regarding its name.

From By Goo to Kamarah

The village was not always called Kamarah. Its first name was By Goo. This name was used for some time before it was changed.

The name Kamarah comes from the local Aboriginal language. In this language, 'Kamarah' means 'sleep'. This gives the village a peaceful and historical connection to the land.

Kamarah's Past

Like many small towns, Kamarah has a history tied to its services and transport.

The Post Office

The first post office in the area opened on 2 December 1910. It was called the Bygoo Post Office. Just one year later, in 1911, its name was changed to Kamarah. The Kamarah Post Office served the community for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1986.

The Railway Line

A railway line reached Kamarah in 1908. This was the Temora-Roto railway line. The railway station in Kamarah was an important stop for people and goods. However, the station closed in 1975. Even though the station is no longer open, the railway line is still used today. It is mainly used for goods trains, helping to move products across the region.
