Where the River Flows
The Kangaroo River starts in the Budderoo National Park. This is about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) north-west of the Illawarra lookout. The river begins its journey by flowing towards the north-west.
Carrington Falls and Plateaus
The river reaches Carrington Falls, a beautiful waterfall. Here, the water flows over the edge of the Budderoo Plateau. A plateau is a large, flat area of land that is higher than the land around it. The edge of a plateau is called an escarpment.
Journey Through Valleys
After the falls, the river turns to the south-west. It then flows through two communities. These are Upper Kangaroo Valley and Kangaroo Valley. The river also passes into the Morton National Park. This park is known for its amazing natural beauty.
Meeting the Shoalhaven River
The Kangaroo River finishes its journey by flowing into Lake Yarrunga. This lake is actually a reservoir, which is a large artificial lake used to store water. Lake Yarrunga was formed by the Tallowa Dam. The Kangaroo River joins the Shoalhaven River just below this dam. The point where two rivers meet is called a confluence. The Kangaroo River drops 234 meters (768 feet) over its 47-kilometer (29-mile) path.
Hampden Bridge
A famous landmark crosses the Kangaroo River. This is the historic Hampden Bridge. It is located in the town of Kangaroo Valley. This old bridge is a popular spot for visitors.
