Kapalua is a special community in Maui County, Hawaiʻi, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). A large resort built by the Maui Land & Pineapple Company stretches from Kapalua Bay and Honolua Bay inland. In 2020, about 495 people lived here.

Exploring Kapalua's Location
Kapalua is found on the northwest coast of Maui. You can reach it by driving along Route 30, also called the Honoapiʻilani Highway. The original Hawaiian name for this area was Honokahua.
How Big is Kapalua?
This community covers about 15.1 square kilometers (5.86 square miles). Most of this area, about 12.4 square kilometers (4.84 square miles), is land. The rest, about 2.6 square kilometers (1.01 square miles), is water.
From Kapalua, you can enjoy amazing views of the nearby islands. You can see Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi across the water.

Discovering Kapalua's Beaches
Kapalua is famous for its beautiful beaches. Kapalua Bay is the main beach and the resort's namesake. The name kapa lua means "two borders" in the Hawaiian language.
Other popular beaches include Oneloa Bay and Honokahua Bay. These are also part of the resort area. North of Kapalua are Mokuleʻia Bay and Honolua Bay. To the south, you'll find Nāpili.
Kapalua Bay has won many awards. It was named "Best Beach in the World" by Condé Nast Traveler magazine. It was also called "America's Best Beach" by Stephen Leatherman and the Travel Channel.
The History of Fleming Beach
During the time when sugar plantations were common, Kapalua beach was known as Fleming Beach. It was later renamed after the resort. A public beach access point nearby was named D.T. Fleming Park in 1975. This honored David Thomas Fleming (1881–1955). He was the manager of the Honolua Plantation before the resort was built.
Getting Around Kapalua
The small Kapalua Airport was built in 1987. It is located to the south in Honokōwai. This airport replaced an even smaller one called Kaanapali Airport.
