Karin Bubaš (born in 1976 in Vancouver, British Columbia) is a Canadian artist. She is known for her interesting work using different art forms like photography, painting, and drawing.

Growing Up

Karin Bubaš grew up in North Vancouver. She studied art at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, which is a famous art school.

Her Artworks

Karin Bubaš started showing her photographic art in 1997. Her photos were part of several group art shows. Her very first solo show, called Happy Friday Night, happened in Vancouver in 1999.

One of her important series of works, Leon's Palace, was finished in 2001. Some pieces from Leon's Palace are now owned by the Vancouver Art Gallery. A well-known Canadian writer and artist, Douglas Coupland, also owns some of these images. He even put them in his 2002 book, Souvenir of Canada.

Since 2003, some of Bubaš's most famous photo projects include:

  • Ivy House: This series shows pictures from inside an old Victorian English house. The photos were taken shortly after the owner had passed away.
  • Studies in Landscape and Wardrobe: This is a long-running series. It features women dressed in costumes in park-like settings. The scenes are carefully set up.
  • Colour Field: This series includes both photographs and paintings. It explores how these two art forms connect with each other.

Works from Ivy House and Studies in Landscape and Wardrobe were shown in a big solo exhibition. It was called A short history of subjects and objects. This show was held in Paris, France, in 2008. In 2013, some of Bubaš's photographs were displayed at a SkyTrain station in Vancouver. This was part of a special photography festival.

The The Hills Series

In 2009, Karin Bubaš created a series of pastel drawings. These drawings were called With Friends Like These... They showed characters from the MTV reality TV show The Hills. Some of the characters included Lauren Conrad, Whitney Port, and Heidi Montag.

The idea for this series came from older pastel artworks by Paul Cesar Helleu. He used to draw famous and attractive women from high society in Paris in the late 1800s. Bubaš's With Friends Like These... drawings became very popular. They were shown in The New York Times, In Touch Weekly, and many other magazines and websites. These drawings were also part of a solo exhibition at the Charles H. Scott Gallery in Vancouver in 2009.
