Lauren Conrad's Early Life and Career
Growing Up in Laguna Beach
Lauren Conrad was born in Laguna Beach, California, on February 1, 1986. Her dad, Jim, was an architect, and her mom was Kathy. She has two younger siblings, a sister named Breanna and a brother named Brandon. Lauren first became interested in fashion when she was in sixth grade. Her dad shared that she wasn't always a top student. But he noted that they realized she was an artist and truly loved fashion.
Becoming a Reality TV Star
Lauren Conrad went to Laguna Beach High School with friends like Lo Bosworth, Kristin Cavallari, and Stephen Colletti. In 2004, they all starred in Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County. This MTV reality show showed their lives during high school. On the show, people often called her "L.C.", but she later said she didn't like that nickname. The show became very popular. Lauren said that living life on TV was "definitely a different way to grow up." The first season of the show focused a lot on the relationships between Lauren, Kristin, and Stephen. After the first season, Lauren appeared on an episode of MTV Cribs.
After finishing high school in 2004, Lauren went to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco for one semester. There, she met Heidi Montag. Lauren left Laguna Beach after its second season. She moved back home and then transferred to the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. She did not finish her degree there. She made a guest appearance on Laguna Beach in 2006 during the third season, after her sister Breanna joined the main cast.

In 2005, Lauren moved to Los Angeles. A new show, The Hills, was created to follow her life. It also showed the lives of her housemate Heidi Montag, her neighbor Audrina Patridge, and her colleague Whitney Port. During the first season, Lauren and Whitney interned at Teen Vogue magazine. They worked under the direction of West Coast Vogue editor Lisa Love. Lauren said they had to interview for these jobs just like anyone else, "regardless of what the cameras wanted."
By the second season, Lauren's friendship with Heidi became difficult after Heidi started dating Spencer Pratt. After Heidi moved in with Spencer, Audrina Patridge and Lo Bosworth became Lauren's roommates. During the third season, Lauren ended her friendship with Heidi. This happened because she believed Heidi and Spencer were spreading rumors that caused a big disagreement. This disagreement continued through every season Lauren was on the show.
Lauren briefly dated her fellow castmate Brody Jenner. She later said that their relationship on the show was "edited to drag it out." In January 2007, Lauren became the first spokesperson for Avon Products's "mark." line, which was for young women. She was later replaced by actress Ashley Greene in June 2010. In 2007, Lauren also appeared as a funny version of herself with Carmen Electra in the comedy movie Epic Movie. In 2008, Lauren and Whitney started interning at Kelly Cutrone's public relations company, People's Revolution.
After the fourth season of The Hills ended in December 2008, Lauren wanted to leave the show. She wanted to work on other career opportunities. However, the producers asked her to film ten more episodes for the next season to finish her storylines. Lauren's last appearance on the show was in May 2009. She attended Heidi and Spencer's wedding after thinking about it a lot during the mid-season finale of the fifth season. In July 2009, she told Cosmopolitan that producers had pushed her to make up with Heidi throughout the season. She was unhappy when they wouldn't let her do otherwise. Kristin Cavallari, who was also on Laguna Beach, replaced Lauren until the show ended in July 2010.
In September 2010, Lauren was supposed to star in a new MTV series. This show would have focused on her career goals. However, MTV decided not to pick up the show because Lauren preferred not to film her private life. That month, Lauren shared that she had filmed a different ending for The Hills with Brody Jenner. In August 2013, MTV showed this footage after a month-long marathon of the series. In the scene, Brody returns to his apartment after seeing Kristin's car leave for Europe. Lauren is sitting on his couch and tells him that "it's hard to say goodbye" to a "friend of [his]." The camera then shows a smiling Lauren. That month, she also said she was interested in being part of a possible reunion movie.
In October 2010, Lauren and her friend Hannah Skvarla opened an online store called The Little Market. This store sells handmade items from women of different cultures. In December 2013, Heidi Montag said that she and Lauren had "talked a few times" since the show ended. She added that "it's unfortunate things happened the way that it did, but we're both different people now, older and more mature." In 2011, Lauren made a pilot for MTV for a documentary series about her career. MTV did not turn the pilot into a full series.
