Who is Karl von Habsburg?

Early Life and Family Background

Karl Habsburg was born on 11 January 1961 in Starnberg, Bavaria, which was then in West Germany. He was baptized as Archduke Karl of Austria.

When he was born, his father, Otto von Habsburg, did not have a country to call his own. His mother was a German citizen. For his first few years, Karl and his family were not allowed in Austria. But in 1966, an Austrian court allowed them to return.

Understanding Habsburg Family Titles

In 1961, Karl's father, Otto von Habsburg, gave up all claims to the old Austrian throne. This was a legal step needed for the family to return to Austria. Karl does not use old royal titles like "Archduke." In Austria and Hungary, it is against the law to use such titles.

Karl explains that he is not vain about titles. He says people use them out of respect for his family's history. Even though these titles were abolished in 1919, some media outside Austria still use them.

In 2007, Karl's father stepped down as the head of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. Karl then took on this role. In 2008, he also became the Grand Master of the Order of Saint George. As head of the family, Karl attends many cultural and historical events. He also supports various groups and military units.

Education and Learning

From 1982 to 1989, Karl Habsburg studied law, philosophy, and political science at the University of Salzburg in Austria. During this time, he also spent a year studying in the United States. Later, in 2012, he earned advanced degrees in business and law.
