Katalin Szőke (born August 17, 1935 – died October 27, 2017) was a famous swimmer from Hungary. She was an amazing athlete who won two gold medals at the 1952 Olympic Games. She won for the 100-meter freestyle race and the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.

Katalin also won two more gold medals at the 1954 European Championships. During her swimming career, she even set four world records! In 1985, she was honored by being added to the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Early Life and Family

Katalin Szőke was born in Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. Her father was Márton Homonnai, who was also a very successful athlete. He won Olympic gold medals in water polo in both 1932 and 1936.

After World War II, Katalin's father left Hungary. To avoid problems, Katalin decided to use her mother's last name, Szőke. This helped to keep her family life private.

Moving to the United States

In 1956, there were big political changes in Hungary. Because of these changes, Katalin decided to move to the United States. She wanted to start a new life there.

She first married Kálmán Markovits, who was also an Olympic water polo player. Later, they divorced, and she married his teammate, Árpád Domján.

Life in Los Angeles

Katalin and Árpád settled down in Los Angeles, California. Katalin worked at a bank and also did some modeling. Her husband, Árpád, became very successful in building office buildings and apartments.

They both decided to use the last name Domyan. They had a son named Bryan Domyan, who grew up to be a basketball player.
