Kate Maberly was born in Reigate, England. Her dad was a lawyer. She is one of five children, and her older sister, Polly Maberly, is also an actress. Kate went to Dunottar School in Reigate. She was a very bright student and finished school early with high grades in subjects like math, chemistry, history, and music.

Kate started swimming competitively when she was just 5 years old. She was a champion swimmer in her county until she was 16. When she was 7, she completed a big national swim event to raise money for a school that helps children with epilepsy. She also played tennis for her county from age 12.
