Kathryn Joan "Kate" Schmidt, born on December 29, 1953, is a famous American athlete. She used to hold the world record in the javelin throw. Kate grew up in California. She went to Woodrow Wilson Classical High School and then UCLA. She won two bronze medals in the Olympics. These were in 1972 and 1976.

She was ready for the 1980 Olympics. But she could not compete. This was because the United States boycotted those games. In 1984, she finished fourth in the Olympic trials.

Amazing Javelin Career

From 1972 to 1977, Kate was a top athlete. She won seven national championships in track and field. These were called the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Setting a World Record

In 1977, Kate set a new world record. She threw the javelin an amazing 69.32 meters. This happened in Fürth, Germany. Her throw was much farther than the old American record. It was almost 30 feet longer! Kate holds many of the longest throws ever by an American woman.

The javelin was later changed in 1999. This meant all old records were reset.

Hall of Fame Honors

Kate Schmidt is a member of several important Halls of Fame. These places honor great athletes.

She is in the USATF National Track and Field Hall of Fame. She was added in 1994. She is also in the National Throws Coaches Hall of Fame. Other honors include the CSULB Hall of Fame. She is also in the LBCC Hall of Fame. And she is in the Woodrow Wilson High School Hall of Fame.

Life After Competing

After her amazing javelin career, Kate stayed active. She owns a business called HomeBodies. This company helps people with fitness and rehab. For a while, she coached javelin throwers. She worked with both men and women at Occidental College. This college is in Northern Los Angeles.

Kate is also a talented artist. She creates abstract art. Her artwork has been shown by the Art of the Olympians (AOTO) group. In 1996, at age 42, Kate won the javelin event. This was at the Masters National Outdoor Track and Field Championship. It took place in Spokane, Washington.
