What's in a Name? The Story of Keezhuvaipur

Keezhuvaipur is about 7 kilometers away from another place called Vaipur. Both villages are located along the Manimala River. In olden times, Vaipur was a very famous trading spot.

The word Keezh means 'below'. Keezhuvaipur was also important for trade because it had a small port. Goods were brought here by the Manimala River, especially from bigger towns like Changanassery. People would "keep" items down on the ground at this port. So, the name Keezhuvaipur means "below Vaipur" or "where items are kept down."

Where is Keezhuvaipur?

Keezhuvaipur is located in the central part of Kerala. The Manimala River flows right through the village. The village is only about 3 meters (9 feet) above sea level.

Keezhuvaipur is in the river basin of the Manimala River. This river starts from many small streams in the Western Ghats mountains in the Idukki district. It flows through the Pathanamthitta district and then joins the Pamba River. Kerala is divided into Highlands, Midlands, and Lowlands based on how high places are. Keezhuvaipur is considered part of the Midlands. The soil here is mostly alluvial soil, which is very fertile. The plants and trees you see are mostly tropical evergreen and moist deciduous types.
