Kelvin Ransey (born May 3, 1958) is a former American basketball player. He played both in college and professionally. Kelvin was known for his skills as a point guard and shooting guard.
Early Life and College Career
Kelvin Ransey grew up in Toledo, Ohio. He went to Macomber High School in the mid-1970s. After high school, he played college basketball for Ohio State University. He was a starter for all four years, from 1976 to 1979.
Playing in the NBA
In 1980, Kelvin Ransey was chosen as the fourth player overall in the 1980 NBA draft. The Chicago Bulls picked him first. However, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers before the season even started.
During his first year, the 1980–81 season, Kelvin almost won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award. He came in second place, losing by just one vote. He played for six years in the NBA. During this time, he played for three different teams. On average, he scored 11.4 points and made 5.2 assists per game. His second season was his best. He averaged over 16 points and 7 assists per game.
Later Career and Life
Kelvin Ransey stopped playing in the NBA after the 1985–86 season. He moved back to Toledo and became a preacher.
He tried to play basketball again in the 1989–90 season. He joined the Columbus Horizon team in the Continental Basketball Association. He played 25 games and averaged 13.9 points per game for them.
In 2000, Kelvin moved to Tupelo, Mississippi. He is married and has six children. His younger brother, Clinton Ransey, also played college basketball. Clinton played for Cleveland State from 1983 to 1987.
