Early Life and College Career
High School Days
Kelvin Ransey grew up in Toledo, Ohio. He went to Macomber High School in the mid-1970s. He was a talented player even then.
Playing for Ohio State
After high school, Kelvin played college basketball for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a starter for all four years, from 1976 to 1979. He played both point guard and shooting guard positions.
College Achievements
Kelvin was a very good college player. He was named to the First-team All-Big Ten three times. This was from 1978 to 1980. He was also recognized as an All-American player in both 1979 and 1980.
Professional Basketball Career
Joining the NBA
Kelvin Ransey was a top player coming out of college. He was chosen as the fourth overall pick in the 1980 NBA draft. The Chicago Bulls picked him first. However, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers before his first season even started.
Rookie Season Success
Kelvin quickly showed his skills in the NBA. In his first season, 1980–81, he was almost named NBA Rookie of the Year. He came in second place, losing by just one vote. He was still named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
Playing for Different Teams
Kelvin played for six years in the NBA. He played for three different teams. He averaged 11.4 points and 5.2 assists per game during his career. His second season was his best. He averaged over 16 points and 7 assists per game that year.

Personal Life
Kelvin Ransey moved to Tupelo, Mississippi in 2000. He has been married twice and has six children.
Family Connections
Kelvin's younger brother, Clinton Ransey, also played college basketball. Clinton played for Cleveland State from 1983 to 1987.
