Kempton is a small village located in the Southern Midlands area of Tasmania. It's about 36 kilometers (about 22 miles) southwest of a town called Oatlands. In 2016, a count showed that 386 people lived in Kempton.
This area doesn't get a lot of rain. It has wide plains and low hills. Most of the land here is used for raising sheep.

Kempton's Early Days
Long ago, the land where Kempton now stands was home to the Big River tribe of Aboriginal people. European settlers first arrived in this area around 1820.
The place was first called "Green Water Holes." By 1820, its name changed to "Green Water Ponds." Then, in 1821, it was shortened to just Green Ponds.
How Kempton Got Its Name
In the early days, there were two stations for convicts in Green Ponds. There was also a military camp at a place called Glenfern Estate.
In 1838, the town's name was changed to Kempton. It was named after an important early leader and businessman, Anthony Fenn Kemp. He owned a large property called Mount Vernon, which was just north of where the town grew.
The hotel in Kempton became a popular stop. It was often the first place travelers would stay overnight when journeying from Hobart to Launceston. The post office in Green Ponds opened in 1832. It was officially renamed Kempton in 1895.
A railway line connected Kempton to Hobart from 1891 until 1947. Kempton was officially recognized as a specific place on maps in 1970.

The Jordan River flows through the northwestern part of Kempton. This river adds to the natural beauty of the area.
Getting Around Kempton
The main road that goes through Kempton is National Route 1. This road is also known as the Midland Highway. It runs from the south of the village towards the northwest.
