Keri-Anne Payne's Swimming Journey
Early Life and Training
Keri-Anne Payne was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her parents were British, so her birth was registered there. She started swimming when she was just four years old. When she was eight, a top swimming coach from British Swimming, Bill Sweetenham, noticed her talent at a training camp in South Africa. Because of this, her family moved to the UK, settling in Heywood, Greater Manchester, when she was 13.
Keri-Anne went to Cardinal Langley Roman Catholic High School. She joined the Stockport Metro swimming club, where she was coached by Sean Kelly. She broke the British junior record for the 800-metre freestyle race in 2002. Later, her coach suggested she try open water swimming. This helped her get more support for her training.
Olympic and World Success
Keri-Anne competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She took part in two individual medley swimming events. She also competed in the 10-kilometre open water event, where she won a silver medal! This was a huge achievement.
At the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome, Keri-Anne became a world champion. She won the 10-kilometre open water event, finishing in just over two hours.
In 2011, at the World Championships in Shanghai, Keri-Anne won the 10-kilometre open water event again. This made her the first British athlete in any sport to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. At the London Olympics, she finished fourth in the 10-kilometre open water race, just a few seconds behind the winner.
Later Career and Retirement
Keri-Anne trained at the British Swimming's Intensive Training Centre in Stockport. Later, she moved to Edinburgh and joined the Warrender Baths Club.
In 2014, she won the LEN European Open Water Swimming Cup Super Final in Italy. In January 2017, Keri-Anne announced that she was retiring from competitive swimming.
After retiring from swimming, Keri-Anne started a new adventure. In January 2018, she began co-presenting a TV show called The Wave on the UKTV channel W.
