Kevin Burleson (born April 9, 1979) is an American professional basketball coach and a former player. He currently works as an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons. This team plays in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Kevin played college basketball for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. He then started his professional career in the German basketball league. He even played for the Charlotte Bobcats in the NBA during the 2005–06 season.

Growing Up: A Family of Athletes
Kevin Burleson was born in Seattle, Washington. He comes from a family where many people played sports! His father, Al Burleson, played defensive back in football leagues like the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Kevin's older brother, Alvin Jr., played college football. His younger brother, Nate, was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL). Another younger brother, Lyndale, played college basketball.
Kevin and Nate Burleson are a special pair of brothers. They are one of only two sets of siblings where one brother played in the NBA and the other played in the NFL.
Kevin's Sports Choices
Like his brothers, Kevin tried several sports when he was young. He stopped playing baseball because he found it too slow. He also stopped playing football. He was worried an injury might stop him from playing basketball, which he loved most.
Kevin went to O'Dea High School. He had transferred there after his first year at Garfield High School. At O'Dea, he earned three letters in basketball. He also earned one letter in track and field. He played basketball under coach Phil Lumpkin.
In his junior year, Kevin helped O'Dea have an amazing season. They went undefeated in 29 games and won the state championship!
College Basketball Journey
Kevin Burleson was offered a basketball scholarship to the University of Washington. However, he chose to go to the University of Minnesota instead. He wanted the chance to play in the Big Ten Conference.
He played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers men's basketball team from 1999 to 2003. He had taken a "redshirt" year in 1998–99, meaning he practiced but didn't play in games.
In 2001, Minnesota played in the 2001 National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Kevin scored a season-high 21 points in Minnesota's win against Villanova in the first round. As a junior, Kevin led Minnesota with 146 assists. He was very good at passing the ball and avoiding turnovers.
Professional Playing Career
Kevin Burleson started his professional basketball career in Germany. He played for the USC Heidelberg team in the 2003–2004 season. Then, he played for the Walter Tigers Tübingen in the Basketball Bundesliga during the 2004–2005 season.
On August 31, 2005, the Charlotte Bobcats of the NBA signed him. He played with the Bobcats for the 2005–2006 season. After that season, he was released from the team.
In the 2006 NBA Development League draft, the Fort Worth Flyers chose Kevin. He was the fourth player picked in the first round. Kevin played for the Flyers for the 2006 season.
Later, he signed with the Turkish Basketball League team Mersin Büyükşehir Belediye for the 2007–2008 season. In January 2009, he joined the Idaho Stampede in the NBA Development League. He finished his playing career with the Egyptian team Al-Ittihad Alexandria.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Kevin Burleson moved into coaching. On June 15, 2018, he was hired as an assistant coach and player development coach for the Memphis Grizzlies.
On June 27, 2019, Kevin joined the Minnesota Timberwolves as a player development coach. Most recently, on July 12, 2024, he was hired as an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons.
