As a child, Kevin had a health condition called Perthes disease. After finishing grammar school, he first started training to be a solicitor (a type of lawyer). However, he soon decided he wanted to be an actor instead. He went on to study acting at the East 15 Acting School in Loughton, Essex.

Kevin often said that he and his character, Tosh, were quite similar. They were both a bit short, a bit messy, and had several children. He also used some of his own father's personality traits to help him play Tosh. Kevin was so popular that in 1992, he was a special guest on the TV show This Is Your Life.
