History of Keyes
Keyes was started in 1925 by a railroad company. This company was called the Elkhart and Santa Fe Railway. They named the town after a railroad engineer who had passed away.
Railroads were very important for connecting towns back then. The original railway line is now part of the Cimarron Valley Railroad. Another railroad, the Beaver, Meade and Englewood Railroad, also reached Keyes in 1931. However, those tracks were removed in 1972.
Geography and Location
Keyes is located in the panhandle of Oklahoma. This is the narrow strip of land at the very top of the state. The town covers a small area of about 0.4 square miles (about 1 square kilometer). All of this area is land.
You can find Keyes where U.S. Route 56 and Oklahoma State Highway 171 meet. It is about 16 miles northeast of Boise City. Boise City is the main town in Cimarron County. Keyes is also about 26 miles southwest of Elkhart, Kansas.
The closest major airport is Liberal Mid-America Regional Airport. This airport is about 91 miles away.
