About Khaled Mashud's Life
Khaled Mashud's father, Shamsu, was a famous Bangladeshi footballer in the 1970s. Shamsu was a striker who played with Kazi Salahuddin. Together, they helped Abahani Krira Chakra win the Dhaka League title in 1977.
Khaled Mashud has also been chosen as the new manager for the Bangladesh cricket team. He will manage the team during their upcoming matches against New Zealand.
Starting His Cricket Journey
Mashud started playing for the Bangladesh Under-19 team in 1993. Besides being a wicketkeeper, he also batted at the important number 3 position. In just a few years, he joined the national team. He played against the England 'A' team in February 1995. His first One Day International (ODI) match was later that year in Sharjah.
Playing for His Country
In Test Cricket Matches
Khaled Mashud made a great start in Test cricket. In his first Test match against India in November 2000, he scored 32 and 21 runs.
His most memorable moment in Test cricket happened in the West Indies in May 2004. Bangladesh was having trouble, losing seven wickets for only 123 runs. Mashud then helped the team recover. He scored a fantastic 103 runs without being out! This helped Bangladesh declare their innings at 271 runs. He got great support from his teammates Rafiq and Tapash.
As a wicketkeeper, he made 87 dismissals in 44 matches. This was impressive, especially because the team's bowlers were not always the strongest.
In One Day International Matches
Mashud was a very important player for Bangladesh when they won the 1997 ICC Trophy. He had the best batting average for his team, scoring 92 runs and only getting out once. He was named "Man of the Match" against Scotland. In that game, he scored 70 runs and shared a big 115-run partnership with Aminul Islam. In the final match, he scored a quick 15 runs from just 7 balls. This helped Bangladesh win the game on the very last ball. He hit two big sixes in that innings. He also did very well as a wicketkeeper, with 12 catches and 11 stumpings.
Mashud often came to bat when his team was in a difficult situation. So, he did not always get a chance to show his full batting skills in one-day games. Still, he managed to score his highest of 71 runs against Australia in 2005. Bangladesh's spin bowlers were very good in limited-over games. This gave Mashud more chances to show his excellent wicketkeeping skills. He made 91 catches and 35 stumpings in ODI matches.
Khaled Mashud was captain of Bangladesh for a short time. However, he lost his captaincy after the 2003 World Cup in Africa. The team faced some challenges during that tournament. Later, his spot in the team was challenged by a new player, Mushfiqur Rahim. Mashud also had a tough time scoring half-centuries in Test matches. He was not chosen for the 2007 Cricket World Cup squad. After a brief return against Sri Lanka, he did not play again. Other wicketkeepers like Rahim and Dhiman Ghosh were preferred. He announced his retirement from international cricket in 2008.
