Mushfiqur Rahim (Bengali: মুশফিকুর রহিম; born 9 May 1987) is a famous Bangladeshi cricketer. He used to be the captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team. He is a right-handed batter who plays in the middle of the batting order. He is also a wicket-keeper for his national team.
Mushfiqur started playing international cricket in 2005 against England. He was only 18 years old then. In his first Test match, he played as a specialist batsman. He was the second youngest player, after Sachin Tendulkar, to play Test cricket at Lord's Cricket Stadium. He became known for scoring runs consistently and being a good wicket-keeper. In 2010, he scored a very fast century in a Test match against India. He is one of the best wicket-keepers, having scored over 11,000 runs and made more than 400 dismissals.
Many experts, like former Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons, say Mushfiqur Rahim can bat anywhere in the top order. He is known for being a very consistent player. He is also one of the few wicket-keepers to score over 1000 runs in all three types of cricket (Test, ODI, T20I). He holds the record for the highest score by a Bangladeshi in Test cricket. He is the first and only wicket-keeper batsman to score two double-hundreds in Test history. He is also the first and only Bangladeshi batsman to score three double-hundreds in Tests. Mushfiqur is the only Bangladeshi player to have won 150 international matches.

About Mushfiqur Rahim
Mushfiqur Rahim was born on 9 May 1987 in Bogura, Bangladesh. His parents are Mahbub Habib and Rahima Khatun. He went to Bogura Zilla School for his secondary education. While playing cricket, he also studied history at Jahangirnagar University. He earned his master's degree from the university in 2012. He married Jannatul Kifayet Mondi in 2014. They had a son named Mayan in 2018.
Early Cricket Days
Before joining the national team, Mushfiqur Rahim played for the Bangladesh Under-19s. He played in three Youth Tests and 18 Youth One Day Internationals (ODIs) between 2004 and 2006. He showed good batting skills in these matches. Mushfiqur Rahim also trained at the Bangladesh Institute of Sports.
In February 2006, he captained the Bangladesh team in the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. Future international stars like Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal were on his team. Bangladesh reached the quarter-finals under his leadership. Soon after, he was called back to the senior Test squad for a series against Sri Lanka.
Playing for Clubs
Mushfiqur Rahim plays for Rajshahi Division in domestic cricket. He has also played for many different teams in T20 cricket leagues. These include teams like Duronto Rajshahi, Sylhet Royals, Khulna Tigers, and Fortune Barishal.
National Cricket League
In December 2010, Mushfiqur Rahim scored his highest runs in a one-day match for Rajshahi. He made 114 runs from 120 balls. In first-class matches for Rajshahi Division, he has scored over 6500 runs. This includes twelve half-centuries and thirty-four centuries.
Bangladesh Premier League
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) started the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in 2012. Mushfiqur was chosen as an 'icon player' for Duronto Rajshahi. His team reached the semi-finals. He scored 234 runs in 11 matches that season.
In 2013, he played for Sylhet Royals and was the top run-scorer in the tournament. He made 440 runs in 13 matches. In 2016, he played for Barisal Bulls and scored 341 runs. In 2018, he was the top scorer for Chittagong Vikings with 426 runs.
In 2019, he played for the Khulna Tigers and was the second-highest run-scorer. He scored 491 runs in 14 matches. In January 2023, he became the first cricketer to play 100 matches in the Bangladesh Premier League while playing for Sylhet Strikers.
International Career Highlights
Early International Matches (2005–2010)
Mushfiqur Rahim was chosen for Bangladesh's tour of England in 2005. He played well in warm-up matches, scoring 63 runs against Sussex and 115 runs not out against Northamptonshire. He was selected for the first Test at Lord's as a specialist batsman. He scored 19 runs in the first innings.
In 2006, he went with Bangladesh to Zimbabwe for five ODIs. He scored his first half-century in an ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare. His good performances led him to be the first-choice wicket-keeper for the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies.
In July 2007, he played against Sri Lanka and made a record 191-run partnership with Mohammad Ashraful. In 2009, he became the vice-captain for Bangladesh's tour of Zimbabwe. He scored 98 runs in the final ODI, helping his team win the series.
In January 2010, he scored his first Test century against India. It was the fastest Test century by a Bangladeshi player at that time. He also scored two half-centuries in a Test against England, becoming the 6th Bangladeshi to do so.
Leading the Team (2011–2018)
On 20 September 2011, Mushfiqur Rahim was named the captain of Bangladesh. He took over from Shakib Al Hasan. In his first international match as captain, he scored 41 runs not out and was named Man of the Match.
In the 2012 Asia Cup, under Mushfiqur's captaincy, Bangladesh reached the final for the first time. They lost to Pakistan in a close match. On 11 March 2013, he made history by becoming the first Bangladeshi to score a double century in Test cricket. He scored 200 runs against Sri Lanka in Galle.
Mushfiqur continued as captain in 2014. He scored his second ODI century against India in the 2014 Asia Cup. Bangladesh qualified for the Super 10s in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. In September 2014, Mashrafe Mortaza became the ODI captain, but Mushfiqur remained the Test captain. In November 2014, Bangladesh won all their matches against Zimbabwe in both Tests and ODIs.
During the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Bangladesh beat England and reached the quarter-finals. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad made the highest partnership for Bangladesh in a World Cup match.
In January 2017, during a Test against New Zealand, Mushfiqur was hit on the helmet. He was taken to the hospital but was okay. In March 2017, he completed 100 dismissals as a wicket-keeper, a first for Bangladesh. In October 2017, he scored Bangladesh's first international century against South Africa.
Recent Years (2018–Present)
In November 2018, he scored 219 runs not out against Zimbabwe. This made him the first wicket-keeper batsman to score two double centuries in Test cricket. This score is also the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi in Test cricket. Later that month, he became the second Bangladeshi batsman to score 4,000 runs in Tests.
In April 2019, he was part of Bangladesh's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In their first match against South Africa, he scored 80 runs. Bangladesh made their highest total in an ODI match (330/6) and won. In the match against Australia, Mushfiqur scored his first World Cup century, making 102 runs not out.
In February 2020, he scored an unbeaten 203 runs against Zimbabwe. This made him the only Bangladeshi batsman to score three double-hundreds in Test cricket. In May 2021, he scored 125 runs against Sri Lanka, helping Bangladesh win their first-ever series against Sri Lanka. He also became the first Bangladeshi player to win 150 international matches.
In March 2023, he scored the fastest century by a Bangladeshi player in an ODI (60 balls) against Ireland. He also became the third Bangladeshi cricketer to score 7,000 runs in ODIs. In December 2023, during a Test match against New Zealand, Mushfiqur was given out for obstructing the field. This was a very rare event in Test cricket.
In January 2025, he was named in Bangladesh's squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. On 5 March 2025, he announced his retirement from the ODI format.
International Centuries
Mushfiqur Rahim has scored twelve centuries in Test matches and nine centuries in One Day Internationals. He was the first Bangladeshi to score a Test double century.
