Mushfiqur Rahim, born on May 9, 1987, is a famous Bangladeshi cricketer. He used to be the captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team. He is a right-handed batter who plays in the middle of the batting order. He is also a skilled wicket-keeper.
Mushfiqur started playing international cricket in 2005. He was only 18 years old when he played his first Test match against England. He was one of the youngest players ever to play Test cricket at the famous Lord's Cricket Ground. He became known for scoring runs consistently. He was also a very good wicket-keeper for Bangladesh's spin bowlers. In 2010, he scored a very fast century in a Test match against India. This was the quickest century ever by a Bangladeshi player at that time.
Many experts say Mushfiqur Rahim is a very flexible batter. He can bat anywhere in the top order. He is also known for being a consistent player. He is one of the few wicket-keepers to score over 1000 runs in all three types of cricket (Test, ODI, T20I). He holds the record for the highest score by a Bangladeshi in Test cricket. He is also the only wicket-keeper-batsman to score two double centuries in Test matches. Later, he became the first Bangladeshi to score three double centuries in Tests. Mushfiqur is also the only Bangladeshi player to win 150 international matches.

Early Life and Family
Mushfiqur Rahim was born on May 9, 1987, in Bogura, Bangladesh. His parents are Mahbub Habib and Rahima Khatun. He went to Bogura Zilla School for his secondary education. While playing cricket, he also studied history at Jahangirnagar University. He earned his master's degree from the university in 2012.
In 2014, he married Jannatul Kifayet Mondi. Her sister, Jannatul Kawsar Mishti, is married to fellow cricketer Mahmudullah. Mushfiqur Rahim and his wife had a son named Mayan in 2018.
Early Cricket Career
Before joining the national team, Mushfiqur Rahim played for the Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team. He played in three Youth Tests and 18 Youth One Day Internationals (ODIs) between 2004 and 2006. He performed well with the bat in these matches. Mushfiqur Rahim also trained at the Bangladesh Institute of Sports.
In February 2006, he captained the Bangladesh team in the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. Future international stars like Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal were on his team. Bangladesh reached the quarter-finals of the tournament under his leadership. Soon after, he was called back to the senior Test squad.
Domestic and T20 Franchise Career
Mushfiqur Rahim plays for Rajshahi Division in domestic cricket. He has also played for many different teams in T20 leagues. These include teams like Duronto Rajshahi, Sylhet Royals, Khulna Tigers, and Sylhet Strikers.
National Cricket League Highlights
In December 2010, Mushfiqur Rahim scored his highest runs in a one-day match for Rajshahi. He made 114 runs from 120 balls. In first-class matches, he has scored over 6500 runs. This includes many half-centuries and centuries.
Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) started the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in 2012. Mushfiqur was chosen as an 'icon player' for Duronto Rajshahi. He led his team to the semi-finals.
In 2013, he played for Sylhet Royals. He was the top run-scorer in that tournament, with 440 runs in 13 matches. He continued to be a top performer in later BPL seasons. In November 2019, he played for the Khulna Tigers. He was the second-highest run-scorer, making 491 runs in 14 matches. He even scored his career-best of 98 runs not out.
In January 2023, while playing for the Sylhet Strikers, he became the first cricketer to play 100 matches in the Bangladesh Premier League.
International Career
Early Years (2005-2010)
Mushfiqur Rahim was picked for Bangladesh's first tour of England in 2005. He was only 17 years old. He played as a specialist batsman in the first Test match at Lord's. He scored 19 runs in the first innings. After twisting his ankle, he could not play for the rest of the tour.
In 2006, he toured Zimbabwe and scored his first half-century in an ODI. His good performances led him to become the main wicket-keeper for Bangladesh in the 2007 Cricket World Cup. In July 2007, he made a record 191-run partnership with Mohammad Ashraful against Sri Lanka.
In August 2009, Mushfiqur Rahim became the vice-captain for Bangladesh's tour of Zimbabwe. He scored 98 runs in one match, helping his team win the series. He also scored his first Test century in January 2010 against India. This was the fastest Test century by a Bangladeshi player at that time.
Becoming Captain (2011–2018)
On September 20, 2011, Mushfiqur Rahim was named the captain of the Bangladesh team. He took over from Shakib Al Hasan. His first international match as captain was a T20I against West Indies. He scored 41 runs not out and helped his team win.
In the 2012 Asia Cup, Mushfiqur Rahim led Bangladesh to the final for the first time. They played well but lost to Pakistan. On March 11, 2013, he made history by becoming the first Bangladeshi player to score a double century in Test cricket. He scored 200 runs against Sri Lanka.
He briefly resigned as captain in May 2013 but decided to continue. In 2014, he suffered a finger injury while playing against Sri Lanka. Later that year, Mashrafe Mortaza became the ODI captain, but Mushfiqur Rahim remained the Test captain. In November 2014, Bangladesh won all their matches against Zimbabwe in both Tests and ODIs. Mushfiqur was named the man of the series for the ODIs.
During the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Bangladesh defeated England and reached the quarter-finals. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad made a record 141-run partnership against England.
Recent Years (2017-Present)
In January 2017, Mushfiqur Rahim was hit on the helmet during a Test match against New Zealand. He was taken to the hospital but was fine. In March 2017, he completed 100 dismissals as a wicket-keeper. He was the first Bangladeshi wicket-keeper to reach this milestone.
In October 2017, he became the first Bangladeshi batsman to score an international century against South Africa. ESPNcricinfo also chose him as the wicket-keeper in their Test XI of the year 2017.
In November 2018, he scored 219 runs not out against Zimbabwe. This made him the first wicket-keeper-batsman to score two double centuries in Test cricket. His score of 219* is the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi in Test cricket. Later that month, he became the second Bangladeshi batsman to score 4,000 runs in Tests.
2019 Cricket World Cup
Mushfiqur Rahim was part of Bangladesh's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In their first match against South Africa, he scored 80 runs. He and Shakib Al Hasan made a 142-run partnership. Bangladesh scored their highest total in an ODI match (330/6) and won.
In the match against Australia, Mushfiqur scored his first century in a Cricket World Cup. He made 102 runs not out. Bangladesh also broke their record for the highest ODI total in this match.
2020-2024
In February 2020, Mushfiqur scored an unbeaten 203 runs against Zimbabwe. This made him the only Bangladeshi batsman to score three double centuries in Test cricket.
In May 2021, he scored 125 runs against Sri Lanka. This helped Bangladesh win their first-ever series against Sri Lanka. After this win, Mushfiqur became the first Bangladeshi player to win 150 international matches.
In March 2023, he scored the fastest century by a Bangladeshi player in an ODI (in 60 balls) against Ireland. He also became the third Bangladeshi cricketer to score 7,000 runs in ODIs.
In December 2023, during a Test match against New Zealand, Mushfiqur Rahim was given out for "obstructing the field." This means he used his hands to move the ball away from the stumps after hitting it. This was a very rare event in Test cricket.
