Tamim Iqbal Khan (born March 20, 1989) is a famous Bangladeshi cricketer. He is known as one of the best batsmen from Bangladesh. Tamim used to be the captain of the national team for ODI matches from 2020 to 2023.
He made history as the first Bangladeshi cricketer to score a century (100 runs) in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. This happened in 2016, where he scored 103 runs without being out. This is the highest score by a Bangladeshi player in any T20 World Cup.
Tamim started playing for the national team in ODI matches in 2007. He played his first Test match in 2008. He is the only Bangladeshi batsman to score a century against the England cricket team at the famous Lord's Stadium.
He has scored over 15,000 runs in his international career. This is the highest total for any Bangladeshi batsman. Tamim also holds the record for the most centuries (25) for Bangladesh across all types of cricket games.
In 2011, he was recognized as one of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack's four Cricketers of the Year. He was also named Wisden's Test Player of the Year. He is only the second Bangladeshi player to receive this honor. Tamim is the only Bangladeshi cricketer to score centuries in all three types of international cricket games. He announced his final retirement from all international cricket on January 10, 2025.

Tamim Iqbal's Early Life and Family
Tamim was born in Chittagong, a port city in Bangladesh. His parents are Iqbal Khan and Nusrat Iqbal Khan. His family, the Khans, are well-known in the city.
Cricket runs in Tamim's family. His brother, Nafees Iqbal, also played Test cricket for Bangladesh. His uncle, Akram Khan, was also a Test cricketer.
Tamim's father, Iqbal, helped his sons practice cricket. He would even organize small tournaments for them. His brother Nafees once said that Tamim was very talented. He recalled Tamim scoring 148 runs when he was only 12 or 13 years old.
Tamim married Ayesha Siddiqa on June 22, 2013. They had known each other for eight years before getting married. They have two children: a son named Arham Iqbal Khan, born in 2016, and a daughter named Alishba Iqbal Khan, born in 2019.

Playing for Bangladesh Teams
Tamim plays first-class cricket for the Chittagong Division cricket team. He has also been a key player in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
Success in the Bangladesh Premier League
Tamim has played for several BPL teams. He was an "icon player" for the Chittagong Kings in 2012. He later captained Duronto Rajshahi in 2013.
He was the top scorer for his team, the Chittagong Vikings, in both 2015 and 2016. In 2016, he scored 476 runs, including six half-centuries.
In 2019, playing for the Comilla Victorians, Tamim scored 467 runs. This included a century (141 runs not out) in the final match. He became the first player to score over 2,000 runs in BPL history.
In 2022, playing for Minister Group Dhaka, he scored 407 runs. This included another century (111 runs not out). In 2024, he captained Fortune Barishal to win the BPL for the first time.

County Cricket in England
In 2011, Tamim played for Nottinghamshire in England. He was the second Bangladeshi to play county cricket. He scored 104 runs in five matches. He later played for Essex in 2017.

- New Zealand: In 2012, he joined Wellington Firebirds for their T20 competition.
- Sri Lanka: He played for Wayamba United in the 2012 Sri Lanka Premier League.

Tamim's international career began when he was very young.
Starting His International Career
Tamim played in the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup. He was then chosen for the 2007 Cricket World Cup. In his first World Cup match against India, he scored 51 runs. This helped Bangladesh win the game.
In 2009, during Bangladesh's tour of the West Indies, Tamim scored his first Test century. He scored 128 runs. This helped Bangladesh win their first-ever Test match overseas. He was named the Man of the Match for his great performance.

In July 2011, Bangladesh toured Zimbabwe. Tamim scored 58 runs in the Test match. After this series, Tamim and the captain were replaced due to the team's performance.
After Vice-Captaincy
In March 2012, Bangladesh hosted the 2012 Asia Cup. Tamim, despite being ill, was added to the squad. He then scored four half-centuries in a row. This was a first for a Bangladeshi player in ODIs. Bangladesh reached the final but lost by a small margin.
Key Moments After 2015 World Cup
After the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Bangladesh played a series against Pakistan at home. Tamim scored two centuries in a row. Bangladesh won the ODI series against Pakistan for the first time. Tamim was named the Man of the Series.
2016 and Beyond
Tamim was the highest run scorer in the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 tournament in India. He scored an unbeaten 103 runs against Oman. This was the first T20 International century by a Bangladeshi cricketer. It helped Bangladesh qualify for the next stage of the tournament.

Reaching New Milestones in 2018

In July 2018, Tamim scored 287 runs in a three-match series against West Indies. He was named the Man of the Series for the fourth time in his ODI career.
2019 Cricket World Cup and Captaincy
Tamim was part of Bangladesh's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In July 2019, he played his 200th ODI match.
When the regular captain was injured, Tamim was named captain for an ODI series against Sri Lanka. This was his first time leading the team in ODIs.
Leading the Team as ODI Captain (2020–2023)
On March 8, 2020, Tamim was officially named the ODI captain of Bangladesh.
Under his captaincy, Bangladesh won their first ODI series against West Indies in January 2021 by 3–0. He was the top run-scorer in that series.
In May 2021, Bangladesh won their first-ever bilateral ODI series against Sri Lanka by 2–1.
On August 3, 2023, Tamim stepped down as captain. This was due to a long-standing back injury. He led Bangladesh in 37 ODI matches, winning 21 of them.
International Centuries by Tamim Iqbal
Tamim Iqbal is known for scoring many centuries. He is the highest individual run scorer for Bangladesh in limited-over games. He is also the only Bangladeshi cricketer to score centuries in all three types of international cricket: Test, ODI, and T20I. Overall, he has scored 25 centuries in international matches, which is the most for Bangladesh.
Retirement and Return to Cricket
On July 6, 2023, Tamim suddenly announced his retirement from all international cricket. He said it was a decision he had thought about for a long time.
However, the very next day, he changed his mind. This happened after a meeting with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina. Former captain Mashrafe Mortaza and the cricket board president Nazmul Hassan were also there. Tamim explained that he could not refuse the Prime Minister's request to continue playing.
After taking some rest, he decided to keep playing. But on January 10, 2025, Tamim Iqbal finally announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket. He shared on social media that his time in international cricket had come to an end.
