Mohammad Mahmudullah, also known as Riyad, is a famous Bangladeshi cricketer. He was born on February 4, 1986. Riyad played for the Bangladesh national team in all types of cricket games. He was even a captain for the team in some matches.

Mahmudullah is an all-rounder in cricket. This means he is good at both batting and bowling. He usually bats in the middle of the team's batting order. He is also a right-arm off spin bowler.

He has achieved a lot in international cricket. He scored over 10,000 runs and took more than 150 wickets. Mahmudullah is known for his ability to finish close games, especially in shorter formats of cricket. He was also the first Bangladeshi player to score a century (100 runs) in a Cricket World Cup match. He started his career as a bowler and later became a strong batsman who could also bowl.

Playing for Teams in Bangladesh

National Cricket League Success

In the 2008-2009 cricket season in Bangladesh, Mahmudullah was a top scorer. He made 710 runs, which was the second highest in the competition. This great performance helped him get back into the national team for One Day International (ODI) matches.

Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Journey

The Bangladesh Cricket Board started a new Twenty20 tournament called the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in 2012. Mahmudullah was a popular player in this league.

Playing for Chittagong Kings

In 2012, Mahmudullah was bought by the Chittagong Kings team for $110,000. He scored 180 runs and took 4 wickets for them. The next year, in 2013, he scored 233 runs and took 6 wickets, with his best bowling figures being 2 wickets for only 6 runs.

Time with Barisal Bulls

In the 2015 BPL season, Mahmudullah was the top scorer for his team, Barisal Bulls. He made 279 runs and also took 5 wickets.

Leading the Khulna Titans

Mahmudullah joined a new team, Khulna Titans, for the 2016 BPL. He was again the top scorer for his team, making 396 runs. He also took 10 wickets, with his best being 3 wickets for 6 runs. In 2017, he continued to be the top scorer for Khulna Titans, scoring 312 runs and taking 6 wickets. In 2019, he scored 219 runs and took 9 wickets for the team.

Moving to Chattogram Challengers

In November 2019, Mahmudullah played for the Chattogram Challengers. He scored 201 runs in 7 games and took 3 wickets.

Playing for Minister Group Dhaka

For the 2021–22 BPL season, Mahmudullah played for Minister Group Dhaka. He scored 255 runs and took 3 wickets.

Joining Fortune Barishal

In 2023, Mahmudullah played for Fortune Barishal and scored 208 runs. He was kept by the team for the 2024 season, where he scored 237 runs. He was also part of the Fortune Barishal team for the 2025 BPL season, scoring 206 runs and taking 1 wicket.

Pakistan Super League

Mahmudullah also played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). In 2017, he played for Quetta Gladiators, scoring 37 runs and taking 7 wickets. He also played for them in 2018.

Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League

In 2017-18, Mahmudullah was the first player picked in the draft for the Dhaka Premier League. He joined Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and became the highest-paid cricketer in the league.

Bangabandhu T20 Cup

Mahmudullah captained the Gemcon Khulna team in the 2020-21 Bangabandhu T20 Cup. His team won the first edition of this tournament.

Mahmudullah's International Career

Early Days and Debut

Mahmudullah first joined Bangladesh's One Day International (ODI) team in July 2007. This was for a series against Sri Lanka. He made his debut in the third match, scoring 36 runs and taking 2 wickets.

He also played in a series in Kenya and the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 tournament that same year.

Mahmudullah played his first Test match on July 9, 2009, against the West Indies. Even though he didn't score many runs, he took 8 wickets in the match, which was a record for a Bangladeshi player on debut. This helped Bangladesh win their second-ever Test match, and their first win away from home.

Becoming a Key Player

Mahmudullah scored a century in a Test match against New Zealand. In September 2011, he was made the vice-captain of the Bangladesh team. He missed some matches due to illness but returned to play against Pakistan in November.

2015 Cricket World Cup Highlights

On March 9, 2015, during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, Mahmudullah made history. He scored the first century ever by a Bangladeshi batsman in a World Cup match, playing against England. Bangladesh won that match and moved on to the quarterfinals.

Just a few days later, on March 13, he scored another century against New Zealand. He ended the World Cup with 365 runs, making him Bangladesh's highest run-scorer in the tournament. He was even chosen for the 'Team of the Tournament' by Cricbuzz.

2017 ICC Champions Trophy

Mahmudullah scored another century against New Zealand in a very important match during the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. In that game, he and Shakib Al Hasan made a record-breaking partnership of 224 runs. This was the highest partnership for the 5th wicket in the history of the Champions Trophy and also the highest for any wicket for Bangladesh.

Leading the Team as Captain

In January 2018, Mahmudullah became the captain of the Test team when the regular captain, Shakib Al Hasan, was injured. He was the tenth player to lead Bangladesh in Test matches. He also captained the team in some Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. Under his leadership, Bangladesh scored their highest total in T20Is (193/5) at that time.

In March 2018, Mahmudullah played a heroic innings in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy semi-final against Sri Lanka. He scored an unbeaten 43 runs and hit a six in the final over to help Bangladesh win and reach the final.

2019 Cricket World Cup

In April 2019, Mahmudullah was selected for Bangladesh's team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

In July 2021, Mahmudullah returned to Bangladesh's Test squad for a match against Zimbabwe. This was his 50th Test match. He scored an amazing 150 runs without being out, which was his highest score in Test cricket. He also made a huge 191-run partnership with Taskin Ahmed. Bangladesh won the match, and Mahmudullah was named the Man of the Match.

In September 2021, Mahmudullah was named the captain of Bangladesh's team for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

2023 Cricket World Cup

Mahmudullah was part of the Bangladesh team for the 2023 Cricket World Cup. He was the top scorer for Bangladesh in the tournament with 328 runs. He scored a century (111 runs) against South Africa at the Wankhede Stadium. He also scored a half-century against Pakistan.

Recent International Appearances

In May 2024, he was named in Bangladesh's squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. In this tournament, he scored 95 runs and took 1 wicket. He was also named in Bangladesh's squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in January 2025.

Retirement from International Cricket

In July 2021, during a Test match against Zimbabwe, Mahmudullah hinted to his teammates that he was retiring from Test cricket. The news was confirmed when his teammates gave him a special "guard of honour" before the start of the final day's play. He officially announced his retirement from Test cricket in November 2021.

On October 8, 2024, Mahmudullah announced that he would retire from T20 International cricket after the last match of the series against India.

Finally, on March 12, 2025, Riyad announced his retirement from all international cricket through a social media post.

Brand Endorsements

Mahmudullah has worked with several companies as a brand ambassador. After the 2015 Cricket World Cup, he signed with a sports agency called Imago Sports Management.

He has also endorsed Scan Cement, a product of HeidelbergCement Bangladesh Limited. He was the first Bangladeshi World Cup centurion to sign a contract with them. Mahmudullah has also partnered with Helio (a mobile phone brand) and Raw Nation (a bat sponsor). He also had endorsement deals with Cheer Up, a drink brand from PRAN.

Goodwill Ambassador for Youth

Mahmudullah has worked with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He helped them encourage young people in Bangladesh through social media and public messages. He promoted the importance of youth empowerment, education, good nutrition, and reducing violence.

Personal Life

Mahmudullah married Jannatul Kawsar Mishti on June 25, 2011. They have two sons named Raeed and Mayed. He is also related to fellow cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim, as Mushfiqur is married to his wife's younger sister.

In March 2023, Mahmudullah earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from American International University-Bangladesh.
