Mohammad Mahmudullah Riyad (born 4 February 1986), often called Riyad, is a famous Bangladeshi cricket player. He used to be the captain for the T20 International team. He plays for Dhaka Division and has played for his country in all types of cricket games.

Mahmudullah is an all-rounder, which means he is good at both batting and bowling. He usually bats in the middle part of the batting order and bowls off spin (a type of bowling). He has scored over 10,000 runs and taken more than 150 wickets in international matches. He is known for his amazing ability to help his team win close games. He also made history as the first Bangladeshi player to score a century (100 runs) in a Cricket World Cup.

Playing for Teams and Leagues

Mahmudullah has played for many different cricket teams throughout his career.

National Cricket League

In the 2008-2009 season, Mahmudullah was the second-best run-scorer in the National Cricket League. He scored 710 runs, averaging 54.61 runs per game. This great performance helped him get back into the national team.

Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)

Mahmudullah has been a key player in the Bangladesh Premier League, a popular Twenty20 tournament.

Chittagong Kings

In 2012, the Bangladesh Cricket Board started the BPL. Mahmudullah was bought by the Chittagong Kings for $110,000. He scored 180 runs and took 4 wickets for them. In 2013, he scored 233 runs and took 6 wickets.

Barisal Bulls

In the 2015 BPL, Mahmudullah was the top scorer for his team, Barisal Bulls. He made 279 runs and also took 5 wickets.

Khulna Titans

Playing for Khulna Titans in 2016, Mahmudullah was again his team's top scorer with 396 runs. He also took 10 wickets. In 2017, he continued to be the top scorer for the Titans, making 312 runs and taking 6 wickets. In 2019, he scored 219 runs and took 9 wickets.

Chattogram Challengers

In 2019, Mahmudullah joined the Chattogram Challengers. He scored 201 runs and took 3 wickets for them.

Minister Group Dhaka

For Minister Group Dhaka in 2021-22, Mahmudullah scored 255 runs and took 3 wickets.

He played for Quetta Gladiators in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, he took 7 wickets, with his best bowling figures being 3 wickets for 21 runs.

Other Domestic Leagues

Mahmudullah has also played in other important domestic tournaments.

In 2017-18, he was the first player picked in the draft for the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League. He played for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and became the highest-paid cricketer in the league.

He was the captain of Gemcon Khulna in the 2020-21 Bangabandhu T20 Cup. Under his leadership, his team won the first edition of this tournament.

International Cricket Journey

Mahmudullah has had a long and successful career playing for the Bangladesh national team.

Early Days and Debut

Mahmudullah first joined Bangladesh's ODI team in July 2007 for a series against Sri Lanka. He made his debut in the third match, scoring 36 runs and taking 2 wickets.

He made his Test debut on 9 July 2009 against the West Indies. Even though he didn't score many runs, he took 8 wickets in the match, including 5 wickets in one innings. This was the best bowling performance by a Bangladeshi player on their Test debut. His efforts helped Bangladesh win a Test match away from home for the first time.

Becoming a Key Player

Mahmudullah became a regular member of the national team. He scored a Test century against New Zealand. In 2011, he was named Bangladesh's vice-captain.

2015 Cricket World Cup

On 9 March 2015, during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, Mahmudullah made history. He scored the first century ever by a Bangladeshi batsman in a World Cup match against England. Bangladesh won that match and moved on to the quarterfinals.

Just a few days later, on 13 March, he scored another century against New Zealand. This made him the first Bangladeshi to score two centuries in a single World Cup. He ended the tournament as Bangladesh's highest run-scorer with 365 runs.

2017 ICC Champions Trophy

In a very important match against New Zealand in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, Mahmudullah scored another century. In that game, he and Shakib Al Hasan set a new record for Bangladesh's highest partnership for any wicket, scoring 224 runs together.

Leading the Team

Mahmudullah has also had the chance to lead the Bangladesh team as captain.

In January 2018, he became the Test captain when regular captain Shakib Al Hasan was injured. He also captained the T20I team. Under his captaincy, Bangladesh scored their highest total in T20Is (193/5) at that time. In the 2018 Nidahas Trophy, he led Bangladesh to chase down 214 runs, their highest successful chase in T20Is. He famously hit a six in the last over to win a semi-final match against Sri Lanka, sending Bangladesh to the final.

Recent Years (2019-2026)

Mahmudullah was part of Bangladesh's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

In July 2021, he returned to the Test team after 17 months for a match against Zimbabwe. This was his 50th Test match. He scored his highest Test score, an unbeaten 150 runs, and helped Bangladesh win the match. After this game, he decided to retire from Test cricket.

In September 2021, Mahmudullah was named captain for Bangladesh's squad in the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

2023 Cricket World Cup

Mahmudullah was a key player for Bangladesh in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. He was the top scorer for his team with 328 runs. He scored a century (111 runs) against South Africa and a half-century against Pakistan.

Upcoming Tournaments

In May 2024, he was selected for Bangladesh's squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He also joined the squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Retirement from Test Cricket

In July 2021, during a Test match against Zimbabwe, Mahmudullah told his teammates he was retiring from Test cricket. His teammates gave him a special "guard of honour" to celebrate his career. This match was his 50th Test, and he scored an unbeaten 150 runs, earning him the Man of the Match award. He officially announced his retirement from Test cricket in November 2021.

Mahmudullah works with several companies. Since 2015, Imago Sports Management has managed his brand deals. He has partnered with Scan Cement, a product of HeidelbergCement Bangladesh Limited. He also works with Helio (a mobile phone brand) and Raw Nation (a bat sponsor). He has also endorsed Cheer Up, a drink brand.

Goodwill Ambassador for Youth

Mahmudullah is a Goodwill Ambassador for youth and development in Bangladesh for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He uses social media and public messages to encourage young people. He talks about how important it is to empower youth, improve education and nutrition, and reduce violence against women and girls in Bangladesh.

Personal Life

Mahmudullah married Jannatul Kawsar Mishti on 25 June 2011. They have two sons named Raeed and Mayed. He is also related to fellow cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim, as Mushfiqur is married to his wife's younger sister. In March 2023, Mahmudullah earned his MBA degree from American International University-Bangladesh.

  • Mahmudullah is only the second cricketer ever (after New Zealand's John Richard Reid) to achieve a special "triple" in Test cricket. This means he has scored a century, taken five wickets in an innings, and also made a stumping (helping to get a batsman out) in Test matches.

  • He was the first Bangladeshi batsman to score a century in a Cricket World Cup (in 2015 against England).
