The Kia Ceed is a popular car made by the South Korean company Kia. It has been built since 2006, especially for people in Europe. Before 2018, it was known as the Kia cee'd.
The Ceed was first shown to the public in September 2006 at a big car show in Paris. Later, in 2007, a bigger version called the cee'd_sw (a station wagon) came out. In early 2008, a sportier three-door car called the pro_cee'd was launched. New versions of the Ceed have been released over the years, with the latest one coming out in 2018. In 2019, Kia also introduced the XCeed, which is a crossover SUV based on the Ceed.
This car was the first Kia vehicle designed completely in Europe, just for European customers. To show this, Kia used the letters from the "European Economic Community" (EEC or CEE) and added "ED" for European Design. At first, they called it "Cee'd" with an apostrophe. But since 2018, the name is simply "Ceed," and the letters now stand for "Community of Europe, with European Design." The Ceed is made in a factory in Žilina, Slovakia. It replaced the Kia Cerato and fits between the smaller Kia Rio and the larger Kia Optima cars.

The first Kia Cee'd was designed in Germany. It shared its basic structure with the Hyundai i30. You could choose from different engines, including petrol and diesel, and various levels of features.
All versions of the first Cee'd came with six airbags and other safety features like active front headrests and electronic stability control (ESP). When it first came out, the Cee'd had one of the best warranties in Europe: seven years or 150,000 km for the engine and five years for the whole car!
In 2009, the Cee'd got a refresh, or "facelift." The five-door and station wagon models received updated front and rear designs, including Kia's new "Tiger Nose" grille. The three-door version, however, kept its original look. About 646,300 first-generation Cee'd cars were made.
Different Styles of the First Cee'd
Kia Pro_cee'd: The Sporty Three-Door
The Pro_cee'd was the sportier version of the Kia Cee'd. It had a three-door body and a unique rear design. This concept car was first shown in Paris in 2006. The Pro_cee'd was also a bit lower and longer than the regular five-door Cee'd, giving it a more athletic look.
Kia Cee'd Sportswagon: The Roomy Wagon
The Cee'd Sportswagon was the station wagon version of the Cee'd. It was the only model available with a 2.0-liter diesel engine. It had a large boot space of 534 liters, which could expand to 1664 liters when the back seats were folded down.
Safety Features of the First Cee'd
The Kia Cee'd received a 5-star safety rating for adult passengers from Euro NCAP (a car safety assessment program) before 2009. It came with six airbags as standard, even in countries where safety options were sometimes removed from cars.
The Euro NCAP tests showed that the Cee'd offered good protection in side impacts. However, the dashboard could pose a slight risk to the driver and passenger's knees in a front crash.

The second generation of the Cee'd was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012. Kia said it was more advanced, efficient, and better to drive than the first version. However, it was also more expensive, moving the Cee'd out of the "budget car" category.
In 2015, this generation of the Cee'd also received a facelift, updating its look and features. Around 647,700 second-generation Cee'd cars were made.
Pro_Cee'd GT and Cee'd GT: Kia's First Hot Hatch
Kia launched the Pro_Cee'd GT in 2013, followed by the five-door Cee'd GT in 2014. These were Kia's first performance-focused cars, often called "hot hatches." They were designed to be exciting to drive and show off what Kia could do.
The Pro_Cee'd GT used a special turbocharged petrol engine. It had different gear ratios and a sportier suspension setup compared to other cars with the same engine. This allowed it to go from 0 to 97 km/h (60 mph) in 7.4 seconds.
The GT models also had a special body kit to make them look more muscular. This included a unique front bumper with a large air intake, a gloss black grille, and cool LED "Ice Cube" daytime running lights. Inside, they featured red accents, leather and suede sports seats, and a special digital display for the driver.

The third generation of the Ceed was announced in February 2018 and shown at the Geneva Motor Show. The hatchback version started being made in May 2018, and the station wagon version followed in the summer of 2018.
Proceed: A Stylish Shooting Brake
In 2017, Kia showed a concept car for the third-generation Proceed. This time, it was designed as a "shooting brake," which is a stylish car that mixes features of a coupe and a station wagon.
XCeed: The Crossover SUV
The XCeed is a crossover SUV based on the third-generation Ceed. It offers a higher driving position and a more rugged look, combining the practicality of an SUV with the compact size of the Ceed.
Sales Success of the Kia Ceed
The Ceed quickly became Kia's best-selling car in Europe from 2007 to 2011. It sold much better than its older model, the Kia Cerato. Its sales were boosted by Kia's amazing seven-year warranty, which was the first of its kind for a car sold in Europe. In 2008, the Ceed made up 44% of all Kia sales in Europe!
Concept Cars and Future Ideas
Kia has also shown several concept cars based on the Ceed, giving us a peek into their future ideas.
- Kia Pro_cee'd Concept: This was a show car for the sporty three-door Pro_cee'd. It was designed to look very stylish and was even compared to the Audi A3.
- Kia Ex_cee'd Concept: This was a cool convertible concept car with an electric folding fabric roof.
- Kia Eco_cee'd: This concept focused on being super fuel-efficient. It had improved aerodynamics and a special "mild hybrid" diesel engine. It also featured "Idle Stop&Go" (ISG), which turns the engine off when you stop, and regenerative braking, which captures energy when you slow down.
- Hybrid Version: Kia also showed a hybrid Ceed concept, which uses both a petrol engine and an electric motor.
Motorsport: The Ceed on the Race Track
The Kia Ceed has even been used in car racing! It's been approved for "TCR-specification series," which are types of touring car races. Kia has also had a factory-supported team racing the Ceed in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship.
The Pro Cee'd also serves as an official safety car in Poland's Kia Lotos Race, a racing event organized by Kia Motors Polska.
Kia Ceed Around the World
The Ceed was first sold only in Europe, Israel, and South Africa. Later, it also became available in Russia, Kazakhstan, and Morocco.
In some places, like Australia and New Zealand, the Pro_Cee'd GT was sold for a few years, but then Kia decided to stop offering it there.
