The Hasidic Community
Kiamesha Lake has a Hasidic community that lives there all year. Hasidic Jews are a group within Orthodox Judaism. They follow a very traditional way of life.
This community started as a smaller group connected to the Vizhnitzer Hasidic Community in Monsey, New York. It began with about 80 families. After their leader, Grand Rabbi Mordechai Hager, passed away in 2018, his son, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hager, became the new leader. He is now the Rebbe, or chief rabbi, of the Vizhnitzer community in Kiamesha Lake.
The community also has a Vizhnitzer Yeshiva. A Yeshiva is a Jewish school where students study religious texts. This Yeshiva is located at the site of the former Gibber's Hotel.
