Kim Do-hoon (Hangul: 김도훈; Hanja: 金度勳; born on July 21, 1970) is a South Korean professional football manager and a former player. He was a forward, meaning he played in an attacking position to score goals. Kim played for the South Korean national team and even represented his country at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

Playing Career Highlights

Kim Do-hoon was a talented forward during his playing days. He played for several well-known clubs like Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, and the Japanese club Vissel Kobe.

Top Goalscorer Achievements

Kim made history by becoming the first South Korean player to be the top goalscorer in the AFC Champions League. This is a big tournament for clubs in Asia. He also won the K League Top Scorer Award twice, which means he scored the most goals in South Korea's top football league in two different seasons. He is only the third player ever to achieve this!

International Matches

Kim Do-hoon also had a great career playing for the South Korean national team.

Memorable Goals

  • On September 13, 1994, Kim scored his first goal for the national team against Ukraine. South Korea won that friendly match 2–0.
  • A very special moment happened on March 28, 1999. Kim scored the only goal in a 1–0 friendly win against Brazil. This was a huge achievement because South Korea became the first and only Asian country to defeat Brazil in a football match.
  • Kim scored his first international hat-trick (three goals in one game) on September 29, 2003. This happened during a big 16–0 victory against Nepal in the qualifiers for the 2004 AFC Asian Cup.
  • He scored another hat-trick against Nepal on October 24, 2003, in a 7–0 win.

Coaching Journey

After he stopped playing football in 2005, Kim Do-hoon started his coaching career.

Assistant Coach Roles

He became an assistant coach for Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma right after retiring. He helped Seongnam win important titles like the 2006 K League, the 2010 AFC Champions League, and the 2011 Korean FA Cup. He stayed with Seongnam until 2012. In 2014, he also worked as an assistant coach for the South Korea national under-20 team.

Managerial Career

Kim Do-hoon then moved on to become a head manager, leading different football clubs to success.

Leading Incheon United

On January 13, 2015, Kim became the manager of Incheon United. In his first season, he led the team to the Korean FA Cup final for the very first time in their history. He left the club in August 2016.

Managing Lion City Sailors

On May 18, 2021, Kim took on a new challenge as manager of Singapore Premier League club Lion City Sailors. In his first season, he led the Sailors to win the 2021 Singapore Premier League title. He also guided them to win the 2022 Singapore Community Shield. On July 24, 2022, there was an incident with an opposing coach during a game. After receiving a three-match suspension for this, Kim resigned from his position on August 11, 2022.

Coaching South Korea National Team

Most recently, on May 20, 2024, Kim was appointed as the caretaker manager for the South Korea national team. He led the team for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers matches in June 2024 against Singapore and China.
