The King David Hotel is a very famous and fancy 5-star hotel in Jerusalem. It opened way back in 1931. This special hotel is built from beautiful pink stone found right there in Jerusalem. It stands on King David Street, looking out over the historic Old City and Mount Zion.
The hotel is owned and run by the Dan Hotels group. It has always been the top choice for important leaders and famous people visiting Jerusalem. A serious event happened at the hotel in 1946 when it was targeted by an attack, and sadly, 91 people lost their lives.
History of the King David Hotel
The King David Hotel was started by a wealthy banker named Ezra Mosseri. From its earliest days, the hotel welcomed kings and queens. The queen mother Nazli of Egypt and King Abdullah I of Jordan stayed there. Even three leaders who had to leave their own countries found a home at the hotel.
During the time when the British ruled the area, called the British Mandate, part of the hotel was used as a British government and military office.
Famous Visitors
Many foreign leaders and diplomats visiting Israel have stayed at the King David Hotel. Some of the most famous guests include King George V of the United Kingdom and King Hussein of Jordan.
Several U.S. Presidents have also visited, such as Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. British Prime Ministers like Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher have also been guests.
