History of Kirkby on Bain
The village was once known as Kirkby Super Bain. Its name comes from an old language called Old Norse. Kîrkĵu + býr means "Church settlement." This tells us that Kirkby on Bain has been a village since at least the Viking Age.
The Ebrington Arms Pub
The local pub in the village is called the Ebrington Arms. It is located on Main Street. This building is very old, dating back to at least the 1500s. It was a popular spot for airmen from the nearby RAF Woodhall Spa. This air base was famous for its connection to the 617 Squadron, also known as the Dambusters.
St. Mary's Church
The main church in the village is dedicated to St Mary. It is part of the Bain Valley Group of churches. The church itself dates back to Norman times. Records for the parish go all the way back to 1562. The church was mostly rebuilt in 1802. It was then made even bigger between 1879 and 1882.
Notable People from Kirkby
- Abigail Tarttelin, an award-winning author, was born in Lincolnshire. She also went to the village school in Kirkby on Bain.
Geography of Kirkby on Bain
Kirkby on Bain is located in the glacial Bain Valley. This is where the River Bain and Haltham Beck meet. In the 1790s, the River Bain was made into a canal called the Horncastle Canal. Now, the old path of the river is often just a small stream. In some places, it is even dry.
Northern Areas
To the north, you can see the shallow valley of the River Bain. Along the valley floor and areas that flood, the land is mostly used for farming. Farmers raise cattle and sheep here. Further away from the river, the land is used more for growing crops.
Southern Areas
To the south along the valley, there are sand and gravel pits. Many of these pits are no longer used. Some have been turned into the Kirkby Gravel Pits Nature Reserve. This reserve is looked after by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. The nature reserve has many different types of plants and animals. It is one of the few places in the county where the Eurasian spoonbill bird has been seen.
Western Areas
To the west are Kirkby and Roughton Moors. This area used to be covered in Lowland Heath. Now, this type of land is mostly found only at Fox Hill. Beyond that is Ostler's Plantation, which is a forest of pine trees. The Forestry Commission owns this forest. In this area, you can find Kirkby Moor and Moor Farm Nature Reserves. Both of these are special areas called SSSIs. They will soon be joined by the old airfield of RAF Woodhall Spa. The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust bought this land in September 2014.
