Kite is a small city located in Johnson County, Georgia, United States. It sits right next to the Little Ohoopee River. In 2020, about 160 people lived there, making it a quiet and friendly place.
How Kite Began
The city of Kite got its name from a man named Shaderick Kight. He was very generous and donated the land where the town was built.
He asked for the town's name to be spelled "Kite" instead of "Kight." This simpler spelling made it easier for mail to be delivered and sorted. The state government of Georgia officially recognized Kite as a city in 1891.
Where is Kite Located?
Kite is found in the eastern part of Johnson County. You can find its exact spot using coordinates: 32.691472 degrees North and -82.515378 degrees West.
A main road, U.S. Route 221, runs through the middle of Kite. It's known as Montgomery Street in town. This road goes north about 14 miles to Bartow and south about 25 miles to Soperton.
Another important road, Georgia State Route 57, also crosses through Kite. This road, called Kight Road, goes west about 12 miles to Wrightsville. Wrightsville is the main town and government center for Johnson County. Route 57 also goes southeast about 13 miles to Swainsboro.
The United States Census Bureau says that Kite covers a total area of about 2.1 square kilometers (0.81 square miles). Most of this area is land, with only a tiny bit (about 0.01 square kilometers or 0.63%) being water.
Kite's Weather
Kite, Georgia, experiences a range of temperatures throughout the year. The warmest months are usually July and August, while January and February are the coolest.
