Knockan (pronounced 'NOCK-an') is a small, charming village located on the beautiful Isle of Mull in Scotland. Its name comes from the Scottish Gaelic word An Cnocan, which means 'little hill'. This peaceful spot is home to six traditional 'crofts', which are small farms with a house and land. It's part of the wider community of Ardtun, found in the southern part of the island.
Exploring Knockan Village
Knockan is known for its unique and traditional homes. One special cottage, also named "Knockan", stands out with its bright red roof and white walls. It sits right by a small hill, which is how the village got its name! This cottage is about 200 years old. It was first built by a weaver, someone who made cloth, from the local farming community. Today, the same family, the descendants of Donald Black, still own it. Other traditional farmhouses in Knockan include "Knockan House" and "Rhudda na Cruban".
Getting to Knockan
Knockan is located on a smaller road that connects to the main A849. This main road is important for getting around the southern part of Mull. It travels all the way from Salen to Fionnphort, passing through Craignure. This makes Knockan easy to reach for visitors exploring the island.
