About Kocaeli University
Kocaeli University first started in 1976. Back then, it was called the Academy of Engineering and Architecture of Kocaeli. Its first departments taught subjects like electrical and mechanical engineering, basic sciences, and modern languages. It became part of another university, Yıldız University, in 1982. Then, in 1992, it became its own university again.
A New Start After the Earthquake
In July 1992, the Turkish government decided to open 22 new universities across the country. Kocaeli University was one of them. Before a big event in 1999, the 1999 İzmit earthquake, Kocaeli University had about 20,000 students. It also had 1,150 teachers and a large campus.
The earthquake was a very difficult time for the university. It lost almost 75% of its buildings. But the university quickly found new spaces at its Arslanbey Campus to make up for the damage. This helped the university get back on its feet quickly. In 2004, the university moved to its main campus, called Umuttepe Campus.
Where is the Campus?
Kocaeli University's main campus, Umuttepe Campus, is just outside Izmit. This area, Kocaeli, is known for being a very industrialized part of Turkey. Most of the university's main departments are on this campus. However, some special departments, like the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Faculty of Architecture & Design, the Faculty of Dentistry, and the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, are located elsewhere.
The university is also easy to get to. Istanbul is only about 90 kilometers (about 56 miles) away. There's also a major international airport, Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, about 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) from Izmit. This makes it much easier for students and visitors to reach the university. Because Kocaeli is so close to Istanbul, many students who attend Kocaeli University come from Istanbul.
Connecting with the World
Kocaeli University has a special department that works on international relations. This team helps the university stay updated with global education standards, like the Bologna Process. They also manage the university's involvement in student exchange programs. These programs include Erasmus and Leonardo da Vinci. These programs allow students to study or train in other countries.
The university is also a member of the European University Association. This membership helps Kocaeli University's academic work be recognized more widely around the world.
What Can You Study?
While Kocaeli University is well-known for its technical and engineering subjects, it also offers many other courses. Students can choose from a wide range of subjects in social sciences and arts. This means there's something for many different interests!
