History of Kocaeli University
How the University Started
Kocaeli University first opened its doors in 1976. Back then, it was known as the Academy of Engineering and Architecture of Kocaeli. It started with departments like electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, basic sciences, and modern languages.
Becoming Kocaeli University
In 1982, the academy became part of Yıldız University. Later, in July 1992, the Turkish government decided to create 22 new universities across the country. Kocaeli University was one of them, becoming its own independent university.
Overcoming Challenges
Before a big earthquake hit Izmit in 1999, Kocaeli University was already quite large. It had about 20,000 students and many staff members. The earthquake caused a lot of damage, destroying nearly 75% of the university's buildings. However, the university quickly recovered. It used its Arslanbey Campus to make up for the losses. By 2004, the university moved to its current main campus, called Umuttepe Campus.
Kocaeli University Campuses
Main Campus Location
The main campus of Kocaeli University is the Umuttepe Campus. It is located just outside the city of Izmit. This area, Kocaeli, is known for being a very industrial part of Turkey. Most of the university's different schools, called faculties, are on this campus.
Other University Locations
Some faculties are located in other parts of the city. For example, the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Faculty of Architecture & Design, the Faculty of Dentistry, and the Faculty of Animal Husbandry are in different locations.
Getting to the University
Kocaeli University is quite easy to reach. The big city of Istanbul is only about 90 kilometers (about 56 miles) away. Also, Istanbul's secondary international airport, Sabiha Gökçen, is about 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) from Izmit. This makes it easier for students to travel to and from the university. Many students who attend Kocaeli University come from Istanbul because it is so close.
International Connections
Kocaeli University works hard to connect with universities around the world. It has a special department that helps with international relations. This department makes sure the university follows the Bologna Process, which helps make education systems similar across Europe.
The university also takes part in programs like Erasmus and Leonardo da Vinci. These programs allow students to study or train in other countries. Kocaeli University is also a member of the European University Association. This membership helps the university's academic work be recognized more widely around the world.
What You Can Study
While Kocaeli University is well-known for its technical and engineering subjects, it also offers many other courses. Students can choose from a wide range of subjects in social sciences and arts. This means there are many different paths for students to explore their interests and learn new things.
