Koji Funamoto: A Football Legend
Early Days and High School Football
Koji Funamoto started his football journey in his hometown of Hiroshima. From 1958 to 1960, he played for Hiroshima University High School. He was part of a strong team that included future stars like Aritatsu Ogi and Yasuyuki Kuwahara. In 1959, his team reached second place in the All Japan High School Soccer Tournament. The next year, in 1960, they made it to the quarterfinals. Funamoto's skills as a goalkeeper were already clear during these years.
Playing for Toyo Industries
After high school, Funamoto joined the Toyo Industries football club in 1961. This club became a founding member of the Japan Soccer League (JSL) in 1965. The JSL was Japan's first national football league. Funamoto stayed with Toyo Industries for 11 seasons in the JSL until he retired in 1975. He was an incredibly consistent player, playing in all 166 league matches during his time there.
Winning Championships with Toyo Industries
With Funamoto as their goalkeeper, Toyo Industries became a dominant force in Japanese football. They won the JSL championship five times in six years: in 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1970. They also finished second once in 1969. The team also won the Emperor's Cup three times (1965, 1967, 1969). Funamoto's excellent goalkeeping was a big reason for their success. He helped the team win 75 out of their first 112 matches in the JSL. In 1970, he was even named the JSL's Goalkeeper of the Year.
Playing for the Japan National Team
In September 1967, Koji Funamoto was chosen to play for the Japan national football team. His first game was on September 27, 1967, against the Philippines during the 1968 Summer Olympics qualification. He shared the goalkeeping role with another great player, Kenzo Yokoyama. Funamoto played for the national team from 1967 to 1975. He appeared in 19 matches for Japan, starting 17 of them. During his international career, he played in important tournaments and qualifiers, including the Asian Games in 1970 and FIFA World Cup qualifiers in 1969 and 1973.
Life After Retirement from Playing
After the 1975 season, Koji Funamoto retired from playing football. He had spent 15 years with Toyo Industries. But his involvement in football didn't end there! From 1975 to 1980, he worked as a goalkeeper coach for Toyo Industries. He also coached for the Japan national football team from 1979 to 1980. Later, he taught at the Mazda soccer school for many years, from 1981 to 2007. He helped train new goalkeepers, including Kenichi Uemura. After his coaching career, he worked in the Mazda business office until he fully retired.
Today, Koji Funamoto enjoys his retirement in Hiroshima City. He likes to play golf with his friends, work in his garden, and watch football with his family. He also served as a match commissioner for the J.League until 2007 and for the Japan Football League since 2008.
