A Look at Kollbrunn's Past
The area around Kollbrunn has a long history. Near the church in Zell, people have found the remains of an old Roman Empire estate. Kollbrunn was first mentioned in historical records in the years 741 and 744, under the name «Cella» (which is now Zell).
At that time, the areas of Zell and Turbenthal were given to a nunnery located on Lützelau island in Lake Zurich. This gift was made by a noblewoman from the Alamanni tribe named Beata. Later, the land became part of the St. Gallen Abbey. It was then given as a fief (a type of land grant) to the House of Habsburg, and this included a watermill in Rikon.
Around the year 1450, the area became part of the Grafschaft Kyburg (a county) and was sold to the city of Zürich. In the 1800s, new industries came to the area. A textile factory was started in Rikon in 1817-1818, and another one opened in Kollbrunn a few years later.
