Korean barbecue, also known as gogi-gui (which means "meat roast"), is a super popular way of cooking in Korea. It's all about grilling meat, usually beef, pork, or chicken. Imagine cooking your own food right at your table!
Many Korean restaurants have special grills built into the dining tables. This lets you cook your meat exactly how you like it. If there isn't a built-in grill, some places give you a small stove to use. Sometimes, a chef cooks the dishes for everyone on a big grill in the middle of the restaurant.
Two of the most famous Korean barbecue dishes are bulgogi and galbi. Bulgogi is usually thin slices of beef marinated in a sweet and savory sauce. Galbi is made from marinated beef short ribs. But there are many other kinds of Korean barbecue too, some with marinades and some without!
Korean barbecue is loved in Korea and has become popular all over the world.
Marinated Barbecue Meats
Bulgogi is one of the most popular types of Korean barbecue. Before cooking, the meat is soaked in a special sauce. This sauce usually has soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and pepper. Traditionally, bulgogi is cooked on grills or special dome-shaped pans over hot coals. However, cooking it in a regular pan is also very common now.
Galbi is made with beef short ribs. These ribs are marinated in a sauce that can include soy sauce, water, garlic, sugar, and sliced onions. Many people think it tastes best when grilled over charcoal.
Jumulleok is a short steak marinated with sesame oil, salt, and pepper. It's similar to unmarinated gogigui, but it has a juicy, steak-like texture. You can also find jumulleok made with sliced duck instead of beef.
Spicy pork daeji bulgogi is another popular gogigui dish. It's different from beef bulgogi because its marinade isn't made with soy sauce. Instead, it uses sauces based on Korean chili powder, giving it a spicy kick!
Samgyeopsal is made from thick strips of unsalted pork belly. It has a good mix of fatty and tender parts. In Korea, samgyeopsal is eaten very often because pork is usually less expensive than beef. People traditionally enjoy it with soju, a traditional Korean alcoholic drink.
