Kotcho Lake is a beautiful lake located in the northeastern part of British Columbia, Canada. It's a special place known for its natural beauty and importance for birds.

Where is Kotcho Lake?

Kotcho Lake is about 150 kilometers (93 miles) east of a town called Fort Nelson. It sits in an area known as the Greater Sierra Oil Field. The lake is quite high up, at an elevation of 620 meters (about 2,034 feet) above sea level.

A Special Place for Birds

This lake is recognized as a Canadian Important Bird Area. This means it's a very important spot for many different kinds of birds. They use the lake and its surroundings for nesting, feeding, and resting during their long migrations.

Kotcho Lake Village Provincial Park

On the southern shore of Kotcho Lake, you'll find the Kotcho Lake Village Site Provincial Park. This park helps protect the natural environment around the lake. It also preserves important cultural sites.

The Lake's Surroundings

Kotcho Lake is located in a unique type of tundra called muskeg. This is a wet, spongy kind of land. It's part of the Etsho Plateau region. The area around the lake is mostly covered by white spruce and black spruce trees.

Water Flow

The lake gets its water from the Kotcho River and several smaller creeks. The Kotcho River also flows out of the southern end of the lake. This river then joins the Hay River, which eventually flows into other larger bodies of water.
