The Sweet History of Krembo
How Krembo Began
The idea for Krembo came from Ashkenazi Jews who moved to Israel in the early 1900s. They brought their favorite homemade sweets with them, including chocolate-covered marshmallow treats. These treats were very popular.
Who Made Krembo First?
The first company to make Krembo was called Whitman. They gave the treat its famous name, "Krembo." In Hebrew, "krem" means cream, and "bo" means in it. So, "Krembo" literally means "cream in it."
New Flavors and Owners
In 1967, a new mocha flavor was added. Later, in 1979, the Strauss company bought Whitman. Strauss is now the main maker of Krembos in Israel. In the 1980s and 1990s, some smaller companies tried to make other flavors like banana and strawberry. But these new flavors did not become as popular.
Krembo Goes International
In 2005, Strauss made a deal with Unilever to sell Krembos in the United States and Canada. This was because many people wanted these treats, especially those who follow strict kosher food rules. You can often find Krembos in kosher supermarkets and special import stores in North America. In 2007, another company, Nestlé, even made an ice cream version of Krembo called Lekbo.
Why Krembo is a Seasonal Treat
Krembos are a special treat because you can only buy them for part of the year. In Israel, the summers are very hot. Krembos are delicate and can melt easily in the heat. Because of this, they are usually sold only from October to February.
Even though they are only available for a few months, Krembos are super popular! Over 50 million Krembos are sold every year. That means on average, each person in Israel eats about nine Krembos a year!
Krembo's Nutritional Facts
A typical Krembo weighs about 25 grams (less than an ounce). It has about 115 calories. This sweet snack is a fun way to enjoy a little treat!
