Kukenán, also known as Matawi or Cuquenán, is a giant, flat-topped mountain called a tepui. It is located in Bolívar State, Venezuela. Imagine a huge table mountain, that's what a tepui looks like!
Kukenán is about 2,680 meters (8,793 feet) high. It stretches for about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) long. The top of the mountain covers an area of about 21.85 square kilometers.
One of the most amazing features of Kukenán is Kukenan Falls. This waterfall is 674 meters (2,211 feet) high! It tumbles down from the southern edge of the tepui.
Location and Neighbors
Kukenán is found inside Canaima National Park in Venezuela. This park is famous for its incredible natural beauty. Right next to Kukenán, to its southeast, is another well-known tepui called Mount Roraima.
Even though Mount Roraima is more famous, Kukenán is actually much harder to climb. Because of this, fewer people try to reach its summit. Canaima National Park is also home to the world's highest waterfall, Angel Falls, which is located on Auyán Tepui.
Inspiration for Film
The stunning scenery on top of Kukenán Tepui helped inspire the creators of the 2009 animated movie Up. The film features a magical place called "Paradise Falls," which looks a lot like the real-life tepuis and waterfalls of Venezuela.
