Most people in these villages work in farming and forestry.
Because Kyyjärvi is located where two important Finnish roads meet (Valtatie 13 and 16), it has many services and small businesses. This is quite a lot for a municipality of its size.

What's in a Name? The Etymology of Kyyjärvi
The name Kyyjärvi has an interesting story, but its exact origin is not fully known. The first part of the name, "kyy", is a Finnish word for an adder. An adder is a type of venomous snake. The second part, "järvi", means lake in Finnish. So, Kyyjärvi could mean "adder lake". You can find adders in Kyyjärvi, just like in other parts of Finland.
Another idea is that the first people who settled here came from a lake called Kyyvesi. They might have named their new home and lake Kyyjärvi after their old home.
People in Kyyjärvi sometimes jokingly call their municipality "Kyy York". This is a funny reference to New York. Because of this, Kyyjärvi has a special saying: Kyy York – pieni kylä, suuri sydän. This means "small village, big heart".
A Look Back: The History of Kyyjärvi
The area where Kyyjärvi is today was once used for hunting by the Tavastian people. The village of Kyyjärvi was first mentioned in records in 1565. Back then, it was part of a larger church area called the parish of Rautalampi.
Over the years, Kyyjärvi became part of different parishes. In 1628, it joined the parish of Laukaa. Then, in 1639, it became part of the new Saarijärvi parish.
Later, in 1775, Kyyjärvi became one of the villages in a new chapel community called Karstula. This community became its own parish in 1858. A parish is like a local church district.
In 1913, people decided that the Kyyjärvi school district should become its own municipality and parish. A municipality is a local government area. Kyyjärvi officially became a municipality in 1929. Its own parish was established later, in 1944.
