The Story of Sorsele
The name "Sorsele" has an interesting past. The end part, "sel," means 'calm water.' This makes sense because the town is near water.
The first part of the name comes from the Sámi word "Soursså." This Sámi word might have come from an older Swedish name, "Sörsele."
Another idea is that Sorsele comes from the Sámi words "Suörke-suulë." This means "Branch Island." This is because the Vindel River splits around Sorsele Island. The church is located on this island.
Sorsele's Local Government History
Sorsele has been an important local center for a long time. It was the main parish for Sorsele Parish. After a big change in local government in 1862, it became part of the Sorsele Rural Municipality.
Later, in 1935, a special area called Sorsele Municipal Community was created for the town. This community ended in 1955. Since 1971, Sorsele has been the central town of Sorsele Municipality.
