What Does Rautalampi Mean?
The name Rautalampi means "iron pond." This is why the town's special symbol, its coat of arms, has a picture of an iron symbol on it.
Rautalampi's Past: A Look at History
Rautalampi was first mentioned in records in 1549. Back then, it was part of a larger church area called a parish from Sysmä. Even though Rautalampi was officially part of Tavastia, most of the people who settled there in the 1500s were from Savonia.
The oldest documents from 1552-1554 show that there were only 22 settlers from Tavastia in the area. But there were 57 settlers from Savonia! The Rautalampi parish was officially started in 1561. It was a very big parish, covering parts of 27 towns that exist today, mostly in the Central Finland region.
How Rautalampi Was Divided
Rautalampi was split into three main parts for managing the area. Even though there were three, they were called "fourths." These parts were:
- Keitele: Named after lake Keitele. This part included areas like modern Viitasaari, Kivijärvi, Kannonkoski, and Pihtipudas.
- Konnevesi: Named after lake Konnevesi. This part included Rautalampi itself, Konnevesi, Hankasalmi, Vesanto, Keitele, and parts of Tervo.
- Saraavesi: Named after lake Saraavesi. This part included areas like modern Laukaa, Sumiainen, Uurainen, Saarijärvi, and Karstula.
Not long after the parish was created, around 1563, the names of these parts changed. Keitele became Kymi, Konnevesi became Rautalampi, and Saraavesi became Pernasalo. The Kymi part was later renamed Kivijärvi in 1617. The borders of these parts stayed the same until they were removed completely in 1684.
The first time the Rautalampi parish was divided for church reasons was in 1628 when Laukaa became its own parish. The last division happened in 1919 when Konnevesi became separate.
Southern Konnevesi National Park
Southern Konnevesi National Park was opened in 2014. It is famous for its very old rock paintings, which are drawings made on rocks long ago. It's a great place to explore nature!
