The Lake's Name and History

The name "Kénogamichiche" has a cool history. It comes from an old word meaning "small long lake."

How the Lake Was Formed

This lake formed in a special kind of dip in the land. This dip was created about 10,500 years ago. Back then, a huge ice sheet, almost three kilometers thick, covered the area. When the Earth warmed up, the ice melted, leaving behind this unique lake basin.

Meaning of the Name

The name "Kinougamichis" first appeared in writings from 1672 by Father Albanel. It's a smaller version of "kenogami," which means "long lake." Long ago, this lake was famous for having many long-tailed frogs. They made a continuous croaking sound! Over time, the name has been spelled in different ways, like Kinogamichiche and Tshnuagamitshish.

The official name "lac Kénogamichiche" was set on September 5, 1968, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec.
