Early Life and Passion for Fashion
LaQuan Smith was born on August 30, 1988. His hometown is Queens, New York. From a young age, LaQuan loved fashion and design.
His passion grew even stronger when he was 13 years old. His grandmother gave him her old Singer sewing machine. With this machine, he started designing and making clothes all the time.
In 2007, he finished high school at Glasgow High School in Delaware. Soon after, he began his journey in the fashion world.
Starting a Fashion Career
In 2005, LaQuan tried to get into top fashion schools. He applied to the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons School of Design. However, he was not accepted into either school.
Even though he didn't get into fashion school, LaQuan didn't give up. In 2007, he started working as an intern at BlackBook magazine in New York. He worked with a famous fashion stylist named Elizabeth Sulcer. Sometimes, he would even pretend to be an editor for BlackBook to attend special events.
In 2008, LaQuan Smith created his very own designer brand. He named it after himself.
New York Fashion Week Debut
In February 2010, LaQuan Smith showed his designs for the first time at New York Fashion Week. This big event took place at the Society of Illustrators building in the Upper East Side of New York.
Many important people from the fashion world came to see his 'Water Goddess' show. These included fashion writers, buyers, and celebrities. Famous guests like Andre Leon Talley from Vogue magazine were there. He also presented another collection in September 2010.

For the 2011 New York Fashion Week, LaQuan Smith's collection was shown at the Peninsula Hotel. This collection was called 'A Story Book Path'. It was inspired by famous historical figures like Marie Antoinette and Queen Elizabeth I. It also took ideas from the character Cruella De Vil.
