LaVale is a community located in Allegany County, Maryland, in the United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes. LaVale is part of the larger Cumberland area. In 2020, about 4,201 people lived here.

Geography of LaVale

LaVale is nestled near Haystack Mountain. To the east, you'll find Cumberland. You can reach Cumberland by passing through the Cumberland Narrows. This is a natural gap between Haystack Mountain and Wills Mountain.

To the west of LaVale are Piney Mountain and the town of Frostburg. LaVale is also located along the historic National Road. This was one of the very first major highways built in the United States. It helped early American settlers travel west across the Appalachian Mountains.

Today, LaVale is a busy place for shopping. It has the biggest collection of stores and the only indoor shopping mall, called Country Club Mall, in the Cumberland area. The LaVale Tollgate House, a historic building, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The community covers an area of about 6.9 square kilometers (2.7 square miles), and almost all of it is land.

In 2000, there were 4,613 people living in LaVale. These people lived in 1,924 homes, and 1,377 of these were families. Most of the people living in LaVale were White (about 97.59%). There were also smaller groups of African American, Native American, and Asian residents. About 0.48% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

About 26.7% of homes had children under 18 living there. Many homes (61.7%) were married couples living together. About 25.1% of homes had just one person living in them. The average age of people in LaVale was 44 years old. About 20.6% of the population was under 18, and another 20.6% was 65 or older.

LaVale Public Library

The LaVale Public Library is an important part of the Allegany County Library System. The first public library in LaVale opened its doors on April 18, 1953. The building you see today first opened on September 28, 1975.

The library closed for big renovations in 2020 and reopened on September 22, 2022. It is now much larger, almost double its original size, at over 18,000 square feet. This makes it the biggest collection of materials in the Allegany County Library System. The renovated library has large spaces for meetings, areas for group study, and an outdoor patio that can also be used as a classroom. It even has a "library of things" where you can borrow everyday household items!
