The Inns on the National Road is a group of historic places near Cumberland, Maryland. These places are special because they were once inns along the National Road. This road was a very important route for travelers heading west.

Originally, there were 11 inns in Maryland that were part of this historic group. They were located in Allegany and Garrett counties. The inns that are still standing show us what travel was like long ago. They remind us of the famous hospitality offered on this busy road.

This group of inns was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means they are recognized as important historical sites.

Historic Inns in Allegany County

Many old inns are found in Allegany County. They each have their own unique story.

Clarysville Inn Site

The Clarysville Inn was located on an old part of the National Road near Clarysville. It was a brick building with two and a half stories. It had a classic look with many windows.

The inn was built around 1807. It started as a tavern where travelers could stop. During the American Civil War, it was used as a hospital. Later, it became a restaurant. Sadly, the Clarysville Inn was destroyed by fire on March 10, 1999.

Colonial Manor

Colonial Manor, also called Turkey Flight Manor, is on the south side of U.S. Route 40. It is a brick building from the mid-1800s. It has a classic design.

The building was changed a bit in the 1940s. This happened when Route 40 was moved to a new spot. After a Civil War battle nearby in 1864, this building was used as a hospital.

Early Frame House

The Early Frame House is located on U.S. Route 40 in Pleasant Grove. It sits on a hill above the road. This house is a two-and-a-half-story wooden building. It was built in the mid-1800s and has a metal roof.

Five Mile House

The Five Mile House is located in La Vale on U.S. Route 40. It is five miles west of Cumberland. This inn is two and a half stories tall. It has a large cross gable, which is a type of roof design.

Flintstone Hotel

The Flintstone Hotel is also known as the Piper Hotel. It is located on U.S. Route 40 in Flintstone. This is a large, two-and-a-half-story brick building. It was built in the early to mid-1800s.

It is believed that the hotel was first built around 1807 as a private home. Many famous people are thought to have stayed here. These include the Marquis de Lafayette in 1824, Henry Clay, and Theodore Roosevelt.

Four Mile House

The Four Mile House is located in La Vale on U.S. Route 40. It is four miles west of Cumberland. This is a two-and-a-half-story brick building. It was built around 1840. It has a Greek Revival style.

The inn has a porch with columns and a railing. It was built for Samuel Eckles. The second floor was rebuilt after a fire in the late 1950s or early 1960s.

Six Mile House

The Six Mile House is located six miles east of Cumberland. It is on the Baltimore Turnpike, which was part of the National Road. This road was later renamed U.S. Route 40. It is a two-and-a-half-story brick building. It was built between the 1830s and 1840s.

Stone House

The Stone House is on an old part of U.S. Route 40 in Pleasant Valley. It is about two miles west of Flintstone. This building is a two-and-a-half-story stone structure. It has a gable roof. It is believed to have been built around 1819 as a tavern.

Garrett County also has important inns from the National Road era.

Casselman Hotel

The Casselman Hotel is located on U.S. Route 40 in Grantsville. It is a two-and-a-half-story brick building. It was built around 1842 in the Greek Revival style. Solomon Sterner built it to serve travelers on the National Road.

National Hotel (Demolished)

The National Hotel was located on U.S. Route 40 in Grantsville. It was a three-and-a-half-story wooden building with a hip roof. It was built around 1842 for Henry Fuller. He was an innkeeper from Salisbury, Pennsylvania. The hotel was built on the site of an older inn. This hotel has since been taken down.

Penn Alps, Main Building

Penn Alps, Main Building, is located near Grantsville. It stands between the current U.S. 40 and the old U.S. 40. It was first built as a log house in the early 1800s. Later, it was made larger and updated in the Italianate style in the late 1800s. In the 1900s, it was changed to be used for businesses.

Tomlinson Inn and The Little Meadows

The Tomlinson Inn and The Little Meadows is located on U.S. Route 40 in Grantsville. It is a large stone building built on a hillside. It was built around 1818 by Jesse Tomlinson. It has two full stories, an attic, and a basement.

This was one of the first inns on the National Road. In 1845, President James K. Polk stopped here on his way to become president. This inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
