History of La Cala de Mijas
Before the 1960s, La Cala de Mijas was a small, traditional Spanish fishing village. It had pretty white-washed houses and was also an agricultural area. Then, the Spanish tourist boom began, and everything changed.
Historically, La Cala was an important place for defense. There were four towers built along the Mediterranean coast here. Their job was to spot enemy ships and warn the nearby towns like Fuengirola, Benalmádena, and Marbella. This area was often attacked by Berbers in the past.
Here are some of the old towers:
- Torre de Calahonda (built in the 16th century)
- New Tower of La Cala del Moral (this is probably the newest tower on the coast, from the 19th century)
- Battery Torre La Cala del Moral (from the 16th century)
- Calaburras Tower (built around 1515 at Punta de Calaburras)
La Cala was once known as "La Cala del Moral." This name meant "the Bay of Mulberries" because of the mulberry trees that grew there. But in the 1970s, its name was changed to La Cala de Mijas. This was done to avoid confusion with another place called Cala del Moral, which is near Málaga. In those early days of tourism, La Cala was much smaller. It had about 30 fishermen's cottages, a few bars, an outdoor summer cinema, a butcher's shop, a grocer's, a small chapel, and a school.
