The La Chute River is a small but powerful river. It is located near the border between Vermont and New York. This river is almost entirely within the town of Ticonderoga, New York.

The La Chute River connects two large lakes. It flows from the northern end of Lake George. Then it reaches the southern end of Lake Champlain. Along its path, the river has many waterfalls and fast-moving sections called rapids.

This river drops a lot in a short distance. It falls about 230 feet (70 meters) over just three and a half miles (6 km). This drop is even bigger than the famous Niagara Falls! The water from the La Chute River eventually flows into the St. Lawrence River. From there, it reaches the North Atlantic Ocean.

Where the River Flows

The La Chute River is part of a larger water system. This system is called the Lake Champlain Valley. It is also part of the St. Lawrence River drainage basin. A drainage basin is like a giant funnel. It collects all the water from rain and snow in an area.

The water from the La Chute River travels a long way. After Lake Champlain, it flows into the Richelieu River. This river is about 106 miles (171 km) long. The Richelieu River then joins the Saint Lawrence River. Finally, the water reaches the North Atlantic Ocean. This happens north of Nova Scotia.

River's Surroundings

The Champlain Valley is a very long valley. It stretches from Quebec, Canada, all the way down to Alabama. This valley is considered part of the Great Appalachian Valley. It is a major land feature in North America.

Lake Champlain sits in the Champlain Valley. It is located between two mountain ranges. To the east are the Green Mountains of Vermont. To the west are the Adirondack Mountains in New York.

Lake George is also in the Adirondack Park. This park is a large protected area. It is known for its beautiful mountains and forests. The location of these lakes and rivers made them important for travel. They provided routes through the region. These routes connected to other major rivers like the Hudson River.
