The creek running through La Honda was called Arroyo Ondo or Arroyo Hondo on old maps. Hondo is a Spanish word meaning 'deep'. The post office was first called La Honda in 1880. For a short time after 1895, it was spelled Lahonda. But the original spelling, La Honda, was brought back in 1905.
