La Paz is an important city in Honduras. It is the capital of the La Paz Department. The city was started in 1792 and has about 32,450 people living there as of 2023.
La Paz is located high up, about 750 meters (2,461 feet) above sea level. It sits near the Comayagua River and the Cordillera de Montecillos mountains. The area around La Paz is very mountainous and has thick jungles.

History of La Paz
The story of La Paz began around 1750. At that time, two Spanish settlements already existed in this area. The city officially received its name, "La Paz," on September 14, 1848. This was made official by a special order from Comayagua. Later, in 1861, La Paz was given the important status of a city. Then, in 1869, it became the main city for the entire department.
Who Lives in La Paz?
In 2013, a census was taken in Honduras. This count showed that the La Paz municipality had 43,980 people. Most of the people, about 91.32%, were Mestizo. This means they have mixed European and Indigenous heritage. About 4.78% of the people were White. Around 2.42% were Indigenous, with most of them (2.19%) being Lenca people. Also, 1.32% were Black or Afro-Honduran. A very small number, 0.16%, were from other groups.
What La Paz Makes and Does
The main jobs and industries in La Paz and the areas nearby are very important. Farmers grow plants like henequen and coffee. People also raise cattle for meat and other products. There are places that process timber from trees, like sawmills. Other businesses include tanneries, which make leather from animal skins. Some people work in distilling, making spirits. There is also some mining in the region.
Culture and Fun in La Paz
La Paz has a special festival called "Virgen de los Dolores." This celebration happens every year in November.
The city also has a local cultural center. This center is located in an old house that was built in the 1800s. Inside, you can find a collection of paintings and other cultural items from that time. The center also hosts many fun activities throughout the year for everyone to enjoy.
Sports in La Paz
The local football (soccer) team in La Paz is called Municipal Paceño. They play their home games at the Estadio Roberto Suazo Cordoba stadium. In 2013, the team moved down to the third level of Honduran football.
