The History of Labubu
The creator of Labubu is Kasing Lung, an artist who was born in Hong Kong but grew up in the Netherlands. He was inspired by the old stories and mythology from Northern Europe that he read as a child. These tales were filled with magical creatures, which gave him the idea for his own world of monsters.
The first Labubu figures were made in 2015. But the toy became super famous in 2019 when Kasing Lung started working with the company Pop Mart. This partnership helped Labubu reach more people, and soon, everyone wanted one.
By 2025, there were over 300 different Labubu figures. Some are small vinyl toys that cost around $15, while giant "mega" editions can cost almost $1,000. Labubu has become so popular that a special, four-foot-tall mint-green version was sold at an auction for $170,000!
The Design of The Monsters
Labubu toys are known for their unique look. They are furry little monsters with big, round eyes, pointy ears, and a wide smile showing nine sharp teeth. They look a little bit fierce, but also very playful.
Labubu isn't alone! She is part of a "tribe" of monsters. Other characters include:
- Mokoko, a fluffy, cloud-like creature.
- Pato, a curious monster with a long nose.
- Spooky, a shy ghost-like character.
- Tycoco, who looks like a skeleton and is Labubu's boyfriend.
- Zimomo, the powerful leader of the Monsters, who has a cool spiked tail.
Fun Collections and Collaborations
Labubu toys come in many different styles and series. One of the most popular is a line of keychains called "Exciting Macaron," where each Labubu is a different pastel color, like the sweet cookie.
Pop Mart has also worked with other famous brands to create special Labubu series. For example, they released a winter collection with Coca-Cola themes. They also created a series where Labubu and The Monsters dressed up as characters from the famous manga and anime One Piece.
Some Labubu figures are very exclusive and can only be found at certain places, like the "Labubu's Artistic Quest" series sold at the Louvre museum in Paris.
What Are Blind Boxes?
Many Labubu toys are sold in blind boxes. This means the toy is inside a sealed box, so you don't know which character from a series you are getting until you open it. It's a fun surprise!
Each series usually has several different designs to collect. Often, there is also a very rare "secret" figure hidden in some of the boxes. Finding a secret figure is extra exciting for collectors.

A Toy Volunteer in Singapore
In September 2024, a political group in Singapore called the People's Action Party (PAP) held an event to give groceries to older citizens. To make the event more fun, they brought along a Labubu keychain dressed in a tiny white shirt with the group's logo.
A leader of the group posted photos of the toy "helping out" and called it their "cutest volunteer." The Labubu doll even appeared in the group's official photo, showing how popular culture can be part of community activities.
A Special Guest at a Festival
In October 2024, a temple in Singapore wanted to find a creative way to get younger people interested in the traditional Nine Emperor Gods Festival. They dressed up four Labubu figures in the white clothes worn by festival-goers and included them in the celebration.
The idea got a lot of attention online. Some people thought it was a cute and clever way to mix modern fun with old traditions. Others wondered if it was appropriate for a religious event. The temple explained that the toys were just there as "guests" to make the festival more welcoming for young people.
