Playing Ice Hockey
Ladislav Šmíd started playing hockey when he was young. In 2000, he played in a big youth hockey tournament in Quebec, Canada, with a team from Chomutov.
Becoming a Professional Player
Šmíd was chosen early in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. This meant they wanted him to play for their team. He played for junior teams and professional teams in the Czech Republic before coming to North America. He also played for the Czech Republic's national junior team in several world championships.
In the 2005–06 season, Šmíd played for the Portland Pirates in the American Hockey League (AHL). This league is often where players develop their skills before joining the NHL.
Time with the Edmonton Oilers
On July 3, 2006, Šmíd was traded to the Edmonton Oilers. He joined the Oilers right away and played his first NHL season with them in 2006–07. After that season, he also played for the Czech Republic's senior national team in a world championship.
Šmíd became a very reliable defenceman for the Oilers. He was known for being a "shutdown defenceman," which means he was good at stopping the other team's best players from scoring. He often played against the top lines of other teams. He was also good at blocking shots.
In April 2013, Šmíd signed a new contract with the Oilers for four years.
Moving to the Calgary Flames
On November 8, 2013, Šmíd was traded to the Calgary Flames, who are big rivals of the Oilers. He played for the Flames for a few seasons.
During his time with the Flames, Šmíd had a back injury that caused him to miss the entire 2016–17 season. He worked to get better from his injury.
Return to the Czech Republic
After his time in the NHL, Šmíd returned to his original club in the Czech Republic, HC Bílí Tygři Liberec. He signed a two-year contract with them in May 2017.
On March 29, 2022, Ladislav Šmíd announced that he was retiring from professional hockey. His last game was a very long playoff game for HC Bílí Tygři Liberec, which was the second-longest game in Czech ice hockey history. He played for more than 40 minutes in that final game.
